Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Scott, You did a beautiful job on restoring your Cal 21.:) I hope mine will look half as nice. That 1942 outboard is really a nice touch. If you have anymore pictures please post them.

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Cut out a sample area of damage fiberglass and wood. The wood isn't rotten, just damaged fiberglass. Checked the other areas with an awl and the wood is intact! It looks like the rotten wood is...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

I took my handy pressure washer and used the high pressure spray to remove the loose paint on the underside of the cockpit and cabin. It's easy because I have it removed and setting upside down. Of...

Re: New Cal21 owner

Welcome to the Cal 21 family. I started a major overhaul last spring (?) and I'm still at it. Life happens and things get in your way.

Good luck on your project. Check out the other Cal 21...

Need a Cal 21 Bulkhead Measurement

I need the measurement of the top of the bulkhead just aft of the keel trunk. I think it is across the keel trunk and from to port to stbd quarter berth. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Patched screw holes and chips along the top edge of the hull that was covered by the deck. I don't know if water ever made it's way through the damaged sections of the hull but since I was could see...

Re: Cal 21 Owners

I've attached pictures of the forward bulkhead and three of the aft bulkhead. I didn't keep the aft bulkhead for a template so I can't tell you the dimensions.

I hope someone on here can state...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

So I cut two bulkheads for the for and aft of the swing keel housing using the previous bulkheads for patterns.

When I did a dry fit the port and stbd edges of the bulkheads aren't even close to...

Re: Water in Cal 21?

meeeowlet,

You aren't missing anything because there is no drain plug in a Cal 21. If you go to CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina you can see the inside of my hull as I have even removed the...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Finally bought a 10' x 20' shelter to keep the rain out of the hull and the sun off me while I'm out there.

Before and after of the transom rotted wood removal.

Pictures of the stern from the...

Re: Cal 21 Owners

Your transom wood placement is the same as was in mine. My top piece was pretty well rotted out.

There were no blots on the chain plate, only short wood screws. I think bolts make more sense...

Re: Cal 21 Owners

RJOHNSON,

Any ideas on why the transom wasn't a solid piece of plywood or solid with the exception of a port to view the hull number?

Looks like it might have been 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood?

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Probably go with the factory interior and perhaps some minor modifications. I plan on installing the 3/4" bulkheads forward and aft of the swing keel trunk and then frame in the V-Berth. Not sure...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Eventually I want to lift it off the trailer and drop the swing keel.

But I still have work to do on shoring the hull so it won't go like rubber. You're right, fiberglass is very flexible by...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Sanding the inside of the hull under the cabin is 99% finished.:) Just the tip of the bow left.

Built a frame to lift the hull but it is a work in progress. I need support closer to the hull to...

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

Sailorboy15,

That describes this material so it must be the original finish that was painted over. Thanks for the input.

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

As I am sanding off the interior white paint I find a tan color covering underneath it. The white sands off easily but the tan (paint?) takes more work to remove.

Anyone know what the tan...

Re: Cal 21 Refit

Looks like you are making good progress.

I still have to drop the swing keel in my boat. Have it gutted and took the deck/cabin top off the hull to make it easier to sand and rebuild the inside.

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina

You can see the rotted wood on the transom. Looks like a patch work of pieces to support the rudder.

Both deck chain plate areas had been rotted and repaired before and need to be replaced, again.

Re: CAL 21 Refit in South Carolina Deck is Off
