Re: is VHF STILL the only way to contact bridges?

According to this publication the bridge operator is "off-site" and there are some phone numbers listed as well. It may be easier to cut a few feet off your mast....

Re: New sailor going from Key West to Cancun: HELP!

Watch out for those huge 30 knot cruise liners and the equally huge oil transports which traverse this area very often. Of course you'll have the right of way if you're sailing.

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

I do believe Fallard is right. I also found the same image on Trip Advisor. I located this image of Tahiti Beach, Bahamas and the differences are significant.

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Ohh, Good Grief, I just took a wild guess as I used to like that beach back in the 80's last century when I was a gung-ho sailor. The only pictures that I have are the sunflowers blooming that I...

Re: SAIL Snowbird Rally 2015- Now less for more

Not a nice thing to do to the "founder" and a gentleman. A gift for writing excellent articles and able to do the rally at a lower cost as well, Wally should continue in the leadership position he is...

Perhaps fusing it with poor spelling and fuzzy underwater photography, oh and riding a motorcycle carelessly.:D

Re: Channel 13: Absolute Must

One does not need to be a tugboat captain to know the VHF channel assignments and recommended usage.:)

Re: Refinishing loop rails

I usually need 2-3 applications of Citrustrip to remove all the old varnish. The final stripping I use scotchbrite pads soaked in a bucket of water instead of the scraper. The last step is a good...

Re: Refinishing loop rails

Nice pics and posts, Chris. What you did was "sand" not "strip" but a small distinction. Using 80 grit on your expensive teak trim will leave you with nothing but a pile of dust after a few sandings....

Re: Soft hanks with roller furler

Yeah, who ever came up with bolt ropes in the first place. Lots of work and terribly expensive.

This sounds like more expense than just sewing a bolt rope into your sails and simply sliding them up and down the furler groove when needed.

Re: Forgot my zinc!

Put it on the shaft inside the boat, like Minne mentioned. The shaft itself is a conductor.

edit: Now that I think about it, the zinc must be in the electrolyte solution, the seawater, in order...

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

I just don't think its a "ridiculous amount" by any means. It only takes a small space in my toolbox and they are very handy for working on a Yanmar diesel. Its just what I thought of when Mark asked...
