I dont think you 'really' need a rope clutch to set tension in a boom brake, although a rope clutch is indeed 'handy'.
Just about every boat made has a horned cleat somewhere near the stern quarter...

That is a good solution if the main is loose footed.
Instead of using eye straps you could use a line along the underside of the boom to the main sheet bail and goose neck to prevent it from...

I use clutches for preventers, guys, reefing lines, spinnaker tack downhauls, they work fine...

I have a Dutchman brake instead of the Wichard, but the principles are the same...

I've always been surprised Dutchman endorses the chainplate attachment point, I don't like that idea myself......
