Re: Outboards: sailing with the motor down.

I sail mostly on J24s. When racing, engine is up for speed. When doing a leisurely daysail, engine is up to increase tranquility (I don't like the sound of the water burbling over the engine).

Re: Which sportboat to buy?

If you want a boat to race, the J/24 isn't a sportboat, but have a big class, and can be had cheaply. If you want a sportboat, the J/70 and Viper 640 both have big classes, but are more expensive...

Re: What is the best beginner sailing book ?

I went from "Start Sailing Right" to books on race tactics and tuning. I think other commentors who say that any book will do are probably right.

Re: Proper winch technique?

For avoiding the twists, I find it helps to keep a little tension on the sheet as it pulls through my hand as it eases. This tends to straighten out the line before it runs through the fairlead. As...

Re: Won't buff out!

I love the comparisons between high-performance inshore catamaran racing and... cruiser anchoring.

Re: Anchoring/leaving under sail

If you see someone on the road weaving through traffic, nearly hitting other other cars and running people down, you get to complain. (Yes, about a car driving!) Similarly, if you see someone sailing...

Re: Lifting Keel Yachts

The seascape 27 has a 1-meter, 580kg (out of a total displacement of 1380kg) hydraulic centerboard. Looks hot. Obviously, with a boat like that, the centerboard is designed more for trailering, but...

Re: Did your booze locker just get a lot deeper?

They're presumably using the method described in this patent (Patent US3956511 - Alcohol-containing dextrin powder - Google Patents (http://www.google.com/patents/US3956511)), which absorbs the...

Re: Is a WW Potter 15 Good To Sail NYC Area?

I don't see why not. Hell Gate is fine if you go with the tide. (Navigating the East River - Planning Your Passage (http://www.offshoreblue.com/cruising/east-river-planning.php)) You'll want an...

... I've been sailing since January.

More seriously, somewhat reasonable people are starting to put boats in the water nowish.

Re: "FrogSuit" waterproof cases for iPads

I personally don't need a waterproof charging port. Also, it seems like the end-user could just use a USB extension cable if recharging without removing was a big deal.

Re: Rigging Tape

Oh, to answer the original question, here're some things I used tape for. Bear in mind that I race of club J/24s that I have neither the permission nor inclination to make changes to, so I use tape...

Re: Rigging Tape

I use the 3M Scotch 88 electrical tape. I heard that lesser electrical tapes will get sticky or brittle, the 88 stays flexible and the adhesive lasts. Can't confirm that other tape doesn't work.

Re: 3D printing and synthetic rigging

FWIW, the cheap 3D printers that use reels of plastic rod stock do not product structural items. You can use them to make some replacement parts, but probably nothing you'd want to use in any part of...

Re: Camera recommendations

I have an Olympus TG1. It's probably not what you want (it's fairly high-end), but it's a fantastic underwater camera. Color balance is good down to 30 feet or so, the screen is really easy to see...

Re: Beginner section

So where does the J24 fit in? Datsun 240Z?

On a more serious note, I'd second the suggestion to take some sailing classes, and maybe join a sailing/yacht club that lets you take out shared boats.

I don't have any answers, but here's an example of a successfully crowdfunded sailing project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1985222961/launch-a-schooner

Honestly, I think it you get enough...
