Re: Advice for a young land lubber sailboat shopping

Right on, welcome to the asylum. Have fun now with the boat that meets your needs, and if you end up selling it in a while and choosing something else for the next stage, it won't be too hard - lots...

Re: Advice for a young land lubber sailboat shopping

The point is not that some people who drop $500 on a craigslist special make it a long way safely - rather, that a significant proportion of people who do so, do not make it safely.

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

This.

I cringe when I see most marine wiring diagrams - WTH are they so complicated? Miti's setup is so simple my eight year old can understand it.

Re: Advice for a young land lubber sailboat shopping

Tenoch's numbers are about right for new sails and rigging. Could maybe save a little on the sails by doing your own with sailrite kits.

Plus side would be, at ~$7.5k only a little over your...

Re: Unfettered Use of my Hans Christian for 6 months...

Just want to say, I really enjoyed reading your website several years ago. Your story was one of my inspirations to get back into sailing after many years. I wish I was still in the DC area to take...

Re: Advice for a young land lubber sailboat shopping

Read atomvoyages.com - carefully, especially the parts about refit and equipment. You can buy a Pearson Triton for $5k (or less) but that doesn't mean you should take it offshore without forethought....

Re: "Most common" boat - Lake Ontario

I can totally see spending $30+k on a boat - my long-term plans are headed that way too. But I can't see spending that much scratch on a boat for such a short season!

(but then, I abandoned the...

Re: "Most common" boat - Lake Ontario

You can take it thru the Trent-Severn yourself, just take the stick down ... my slip neighbours used to take their Bayfield 25 the other way from Barrie out to Georgian Bay every year.

OMG,...

Re: Is this sail good?

BTW a Dacron sail can have stitches falling apart, but the sail fabric itself can still be fine. Just resew it - I used to do small jobs by hand (during long dark cold Toronto winters) and carefully...

Re: "Most common" boat - Lake Ontario

Before I saw you say you're thinking of at least 30', I would have said, "Weekend cruiser, stand-up headroom, head, comfortable, reasonably nimble? One answer - Grampian 26!"

That's still the...

Re: What boat for a family circumnavigation?

What about Bob's Nordic 44? Maybe the upper end of the price range on that short list, but shouldn't be more than a 45.5.

Re: '84 Hunter 31 weird Keel-Hull joint

One point from a discussion of I think Beneteau (or Jeanneau, can't remember) iron keels: the bolts are tapped into the keel (as opposed to j-studs embedded in typical lead keels). So even if the...

Re: Cracked bow (pic), would you buy?

$2300?!?! He's got a popular boat that's only worth $3-4k in nice condition. There are a million others out there.

Offer him $1k, have in mind that you'll go to $1100. If you walk, you may get a...

Re: Lifespan of a Diesel Engine

Question for the class: what's considered best practice, considering you are going to run for just a few minutes to get in or out? Let it warm up at idle at the slip till the temp gauge jumps? Warm...

You guys are giving him a hard time. That's not fair.

My Siren 17 was that boat.

Re: What to take, toss, sell or store

Mike,

We had a somewhat similar experience to you - we just did a transatlantic move, and everything had to fit in a 20' container. It's amazing how much will fit in there :-) it seems to me if...

Re: Buying a boat from Canada

Lots of good Canadian-built plastic right across from you in central/eastern Ontario. Check kijiji.ca ... just make sure it's got the HIN or builder's plate visible, or you have appropriate...

Re: Wow how plans can change....in my mind at least!

I have trailered the super-light end of the range, a Siren 17 at about 750lbs, up to about the biggest boat you can easily trailer, my old 25' wooden ketch, at 3000lbs or more (don't know for sure). ...

Post photos here, we'll help you figure it out. It'll be a learning experience. Doesn't get much more straightforward than a Nordica 16. Guy had one at the end of my dock, didn't even bother with a...

Re: Major water ingress - best emergency device?

Yeah and I suppose a 25hp would be ~4 GPM = 240 GPH ... better off with a bucket.

Related question for the class: how fast is a typical "nasty leak" eg. a through-hull completely failing? Worse...

Re: Major water ingress - best emergency device?

The answer to one of the questions on the CG exam here is to take the raw-water intake hose and drop it into the bilge.

I think I've heard of doing such things in real life but I don't know how...

Re: Reality check

Lots of people out there are marina-to-marina types. Ground tackle to them is something for eating lunch or taking a dip.

But what's the question - would putting a windlass and a nice big manson...

Re: Need advice on choosing a Boat

If you buy a "what I need now" 25'-27' boat for $3-5k with a solid hull/rig, decent sails, extremely simple systems, and a reliable O/B, you will be able to explore how committed you are to your...
