Re: I Paid a Dude. And I Liked It.

And I suppose they got their CRANE for free? Or how about their insurance premium every 1/4? It's $21. Do you know how much a couple ascenders are? A grigri, static climbing rope, foot...

Re: Setting up a spinnaker

For a 35' boat, and doing mast/bow on a 36.7 for the past 3 years, you'll need sheets and guys if it's over 10 knots. Can it be done without guys? Yes, but why go through the headache every time...

Re: increasing and consolidating standing rigging size

Yes, but there are a lot of other considerations before making that leap.

Re: Steering cable replacement, SS, hi-tech line or what?

Thanks Paulin for including everything. On this site it rare that people include all costs associated with a repair.

Re: Keel or deck stepped?

Comanche, 100' racing maxi. As bob said before, as long as they're designed right, either setup is fine. The actual section on that boat is scary thin.

Re: Trouble pointing in Alerion 28

There is a lot of good advice, but if you're tacking through 130* of true wind, then something very basic is wrong.

Try a lot more mainsheet and move the traveler up. Boom should be on centerline...

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

Best kit by far is my offshore heavy foulies. Stuff is bullet proof. I can go up on the bow in fire hose conditions and I'm completely dry inside when I go down below off watch. And since I race...

Re: Exp. Crew or Capt. Wanted for W. Palm to Rhode Isl

Will this be a paid position? What year is the boat? Sail inventory? How many other crew? Food and travel expenses covered? To and from boat?

I delivered a 40.7 back from bermuda in 2010 and have...

Re: Clutches, jammers, and hi-tech lines

I usually use a shorter piece of dyneema 7/64" or 1/8" line depending on the size of the halyard. You can use clothes line if you have that around as well, but the dyneema has similar stetch...

The coatings do help, but I believe the fiber alone is a bit more sensitive to sunlight than dyneema.

Not sure I would've used vectran. Who told you it was better than Dyneema for UV resistance?

Re: Clutches, jammers, and hi-tech lines

All of them :D same goes with any rope. Vectran doesn't like sharp turns and PBO doesn't. Dyneema or technora does better. I recommended VPC for reef lines which does have Vectran in it, but the...

No problem, I have a mix on my own boat and have put other types of line on other boats as well. It's about finding the right product for the purpose.

Adding material in the line makes it...

Re: Lifelines, lowers, or not?

Yes, do the lowers. I'd rather have just lower than uppers. If it's nasty weather, you're low to the deck anyway.

Re: Clutches, jammers, and hi-tech lines

Full disclosure: I'm a NER dealer and a rigger.
Bob, what boat? Is it the Albin Ballad 30 in your sig? If so I'd be happy to help you choose a material and clutch set up.

For upwind halyards...

Re: synthetic rigging

Make sure you include that these prices don't include any labor. I'm assuming this doesn't include replacing the turnbuckles either?

If you wanted to do synthetic you can do it yourself. Don't...
