Re: What is the best sailing movie ever?

1937 "Captains Courageous" starring Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, John Carradine and others.
The schooner sailing footage is authentic and excellent.
It also has good lessons on growing up.

Re: tiller or wheel for older design 30 ft boat

It is really a matter of personal preference. I enjoy sailing small boats so for me a tiller gives the feel and response that I find thrilling. However when I sail larger boats I enjoy a wheel...

Re: Spring transport on Michigan

Are you going non-stop or in stages?
Do you think you could make it to Sturgeon Bay in a day? Other options are: MKE to Kewaunee to SB through the ship canal then up Green Bay to Sister. You might...

Re: What was god thinking?

In this context lower case 'g' is appropriate. God don't make mistakes.

Re: Autohelm st2000

Is the rod fully extended or retracted? Try pushing the buttons to extend or retract the rod to see if it stops.

Re: Complete Beginner: Dinghy or Keelboat?

I suggest two boats that are great candidates for beginners. Sunfish and Laser. A sailfish can be had for less that a grand and a good laser for around grand. Both have good resale value. Both are...

Re: small crack in leading edge of keel attachment

Small cracks are not uncommon at the hull keel joint. A survey is a must if you are considering purchase.
If it checks out, after inspection torque the keel bolts on the hard.
The crack can be...

Do not over tighten tapered roller brgs.
As you tighten the spindle nut, turn the hub slowly to seat the brgs on the outer races. When the nut begins to feel snug back it off up to...

Re: ST1000 or ST2000 tiller pilot?

I wish I had read the book. I think the rudder gain is set too low.

Re: ST1000 or ST2000 tiller pilot?

I invited a ST2000+ on my 24 Mirage. It is a great member of the crew. However I wish it would respond quicker to 3+ foot seas. I like to tweek the sails while the pilot is at the helm.

Re: Planning a Topside Washdown System

I was told by a neighbor at the dock that these expandable hoses do not last, if they are left outside in the sun. Mine is stored below decks when not in use. Next year will be its third season on my...

I purchased an expandable hose from Sears; my second best boat stuff purchase next to a Harken windward sheeting car. It is stored in a bucket.

Re: Trailer Maintenance

If you are not sure of the condition of the bearings and grease it would be better to disassemble, clean, and inspect the brgs and races before squirting grease into a "hub cap" fitting. I have seen...

from riblets to swordfish oil.

Black Marlin can swim at speeds up to 80 mph. Speed has been measured by how fast they strip line from a fishing reel. Swordfish are slower, but still fast.

Apparently swordfish secrete oil from...

Re: Hull cleaning in the water

Are we bored already? It's only November!

For the OP: Try 1000 grit wet or dry sandpaper. Just don't overdo it or make it a regular habit. Then rub and polish at haulout.
OK, I'll brace myself...

Re: Sailmaker for unusual sails, SF bay area

Re: Fairing The Keel

Well, if the gap continued to get worse even after torquing the keel bolts and a season of sailing I would certainly take a deeper look. The gap has not increased (it is just a hairline crack) and I...
