Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

Ahh...heard of it, but never used it. I use ASTM, ASME and AWS for metals. Much more information in the grades and types.

And if I were replacing keel bolts, I think I would go back with the same...

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

I would say something, but that would date me back even more if I did. A new bomber was just being talked about to replace the B52.

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

Only certin parts of the skin of the SR71 were titanium. The SR71 leaked fuel while it was on the ground. Fuel just ran out of every seam and it had to refuel right after take off. At altitude and...

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

A G5 temper would be much to hard to be of any use on a keel boat. 316 stainless has a Tensile Strength that varies with temper, like all metals and cover a range from 80000 to 120,000 psi. I have...

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

Titanium, like aluminum also becomes very brittle with cold. The MOE of the metals concerned are close enough that that would not be a factor. Ti will bend before the stainless and would shear much...

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

I would stay with the stainless. Seems the concern is rust and the cast iron is going to rust. That rust will transpose to whatever is used. A good 316 stainless is a good choice. I am not sure of...

Re: TITANIUM Keel Bolts in cast iron?

titanium was developed for high temp enviourments and while the tensil strength is more than enough, I am not sure of the shear strength. I would stick with the stainless bolts. Titanium is good...

Re: My $4,500 US B-2 Visa Saga - a cautionary tale

That is sad to hear. They have cracked down on entry to the US, unless you sneak across the border from Mexico. Then they give you health care and a welfare check.

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

Wellllll, to my great disappointment, I had to opt for knee surgery. Knee replacement has sort of set me back in my time frame here.

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

I will defer to your expertise. After all, I think you personally know the designer of this marvelous little ship. While looking at it Tuesday morning I will make it a point to take this into...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

My intent is to sail the Bahamas, and perhaps farther south, perhaps the BVI. Water on the passage from the Bahamas to the BVI is of importance. I can drink a gallon a day, maybe more. I know that is...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

Certainly don't mean to Mr. Perry. I can really think of few other boats that I would rather have. Even if I could afford them. While your looking at this, if you have any way to add 25 gallons of...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

I agree. The irwin has a wind generator and 80 gallons of water. Leaning that way now. I think I may need a hitch hiker and more room and water woud be nice.

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

Not real sure how often it rains in the Bahamas. I am a little leary of trusting to rain for my water needs. My luck I would miss the rain and my little 20 gal of water would have to last me. Not...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

This is something I am gonig to do. No question about it. I retired the first of the year and I have been wanting to do this for years now. Well, the time has come and, wife like it or not, is what...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

I really like this boat. More room than a Bristol 27. My only concern with it would be getting across the gulf stream if the weather changed and I was in the middle of it. Trying to weigh all the...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

The 28 is a Perry design. Never sailed one. The 30 is a Bob Finch design. The 30 is less money out lay, but needs a bit of tidying up. I do not like the lose wires at the radios. Little thing like...

Re: Islander 28 vs Islander Bahama 30 vs Irwin Cititation 34

I am kind of leaning that way. But the others are in consideration. Irwin has a wind generator also. That also seems like a good idea while crusing around.
