Re: Stuck Thru Hull Valve - Help Wanted!

Try loosening the thumbscrew and tapping it lightly with a rubber mallet or a wood block and hammer--careful not to break anything. For me, that usually breaks the seal between the rubber plug and...

Re: Fasten cleat to shroud - how?

I stow my boat hook against a shroud with a couple of round thimbles (top one large for the handle; lower one small for the point of the hook) that are served onto the shroud with tarred nylon seine...

Re: Ran aground!

Per PenBay Pilot, it was a charter boat out of RI, apparently didn't clear a submerged rock around high tide. All I know. So many colorful events vie for our attention here in mid-coast Maine, stuff...

Re: Ran aground!

If your keel is external and bolted on, then it's probably painted lead or cast iron, and epoxy probably won't do much. Once you haul out, look at the hull adjacent to the keel, and on the opposite...

Re: A question of style

I suspect that polishing brass has less effect on antique value than would be the case with bronze, as brass will tarnish up again pretty soon. You might want to research on ebay, Kovel's etc whether...

Re: Diesel fuel fill hose: A1 or A2?

I'll bet there are a lot of boats out there with A-2 hoses that are decades old.
Maybe even including Casey's, if it's that hard to find.

Re: Diesel fuel fill hose: A1 or A2?

Don Casey recommends A-1, citing the chance that at some point over the life of the hose, standing fuel might remain in it for an extended period. (I just looked it up out of curiosity).

Re: Aqua Signal series 43 nav lights

I found that light on the Marinebeam site. Hadn't known about it; looks like they're worth a try. Thanks.

Aqua Signal series 43 nav lights

Has anyone tried retrofitting a series 43 nav light onto the mounting base for the older series 40 lights? They look identical in design, but the newer ones' dimensions appear slightly different--and...

Re: West Marine Binocular Recall?

Save your pennies and get Fujinons. Bulletproof, and they fixed a problem for me early on (bubble in the compass) no questions asked, and paid for overnight shipping.
You can literally see in...

Re: Best way to attach 14 gauge wire to a battery terminal?

You could probably do OK if you cut the old cable terminals off, attached new ones with the 14 ga wire crimped in along with the cable.

Re: Good short wave radio to get started with

I chose this model based on reviews on this and other sites, and I don't have experience with other receivers, so I can't help you there.
I recall reading that the Chinese ones, mentioned in other...

Re: Florida outlaws anchoring boats with pirate flags

I see I'm not alone.
I've always wondered if you could spread a long strip of that plastic bird netting you get at garden stores in their path, and let them suck it into their engines. Or even some...

Re: Good short wave radio to get started with

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR is an immense pain in the a** to use. It was designed by somebody who clearly never used a radio in his life. The clock alarm will go off at random, unpredictable times because...

Re: Nova Scotia south coast

There's a RYA sailing school in Mahone Bay called Discovery Sailing. He's a decent guy and might have some advice on cruising guides for that area if you contacted them via their website.

Re: Looking for hard dodger top DIY ideas...

I haven't read all the replies so I don't know if I'm repeating what's been said.
I saw a pretty impressive hard dodger that a guy in my marina in Kingston NY made from a molded pick-up truck cap,...

Re: Any ideas for inside hatch trim?

Any way you could get your hands on that pine corner guard they carry at the big-box builders' supply stores? No reason it has to be hardwood, I suppose, if you stain and waterproof it. It would be...

Re: Any ideas for inside hatch trim?

I would second the idea of building them out of mahogany or ash or ? wood. If I'm picturing it correctly, you'd glue up a plain rectangular frame of wood, mitered at the corners. Make the frame's...

Hella steaming light/deck light combo?

Has anyone experience with the Hella 8505 deck/steaming light combination? Are they more durable than the Forespar or Aquasignal equivalents?
Thanks for any info.

Re: Poll: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

One would think so. But some dry statistics might kill it.
