Where near Syracuse are you going to be sailing? I'm at the east end of Oneida Lake with a Cal 25. As far as a spin halyard goes, I don't think it's ever a bad thing to have a spare line to the top...

You could use a buntline hitch on the shackle if you don't want to get the line spliced. I use it on my wire/rope halyards. There is a nicopress loop in the wire end to attach the rope halyard....
