Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

Sounds like you'll be in a great position to compete with him when you're ready.

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

Congrats on your buy. I could only find the compounds online but I didn't check out any specialty shops. The buffer and pads I purchased on amazon but you could probably find those locally. The...

Re: How to live aboard? possible?

As long as you're saving, I say go for it! I have no problems with you (or me) going broke outfitting a boat, I think it is well worth it (and far more likely to regret not doing it than you will...

Re: How to live aboard? possible?

I would really really advise against selling any/all of your stuff to get the boat. I'm making an itemized list of everything I needed to buy for my (first) boat so I can post it for others later. My...

Re: Is my hull in serious danger?

Yes you guys are right. I take lots of pictures because the boat is about 100 miles from me so I need to reference things by picture a lot. Sadly I didn't use any objects for scale and even my...

Exclamation [SOLVED] Is my hull in serious danger?

I had some very helpful people in the sailnet chat room helping me out today and eventually the topic of my hull came up and I showed these pictures:

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

You should remove them. The gelcoat under the vinyl will not match the rest and compounding is a good way to help blend it a little. If you leave the decals on you will likely need to hit that area...

Re: Transducer Woes

I've watched several video videos and read guides and understand the process but I'm still not sure if tapering a 12:1 around this hole below the water line is a good way to start my first fiberglass...

Transducer/Thru-Hull Woes

I've been letting a little 'ole hole in the hull get on my back recently. The boat I recently purchased had a (functional?) thru-hull transducer mounted on a wooden fairing block that was rotted out...

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

I too went with the exact model of everything he suggested just so I would be the only variable (which is variable enough trust me...)

Yes the buffer was quite formidable. I know he said to keep...

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

Take my advice with a grain of salt because I knew nothing before starting with MaineSail's guide.

1. I'm not sure about you needing FSR. I paid $19 for a small bottle of On & Off from WM and it...

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

I did wet sand the blue stripe which had a lot more oxidation. I hit with some 600 then 800, 1000, 2000 wet. Really helped but the white is harder to work with because the oxidation wasn't as easy to...

Re: Tips For Compound, Polish & Wax

Here is what I came up with on a 1975 oday with an unknown history on topside maintenance.

I'm quite pleased with the results but looking back at MaineSail's photos they don't really compare :)...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

Here's an update for anyone else that tries to do this the way I did it...

Basically, if you're going to do this, I'd recommend you don't dremel or feather out the edges like I did, and instead...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

No problem :) I wish my deck only had those few scratches! ;)

That is my next project.

I opted to take the next couple days off from the boat because the temperature is in the high 30s low 40s...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

Are scrapes in the hull (that don't break through the gel coat entirely) potentially harmful? I have very few scratches that break the gel coat and those were the ones that seemingly needed a little...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

I know the topsides are the hull :) I was saying that I didn't think it needed a pint job because except for the 3 dings in that one area I tried to fix, and the random scratch section (must have be...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

CalebD,

Yes it is very likely I didn't add enough coloring, the label warned "NOT" to exceed 1 tube per 4oz of gel coat, which must be really easy to follow if you're willing to risk a $20 tube of...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

SloopJonB,

Trust me, had I not thought that was the way to do it, I never would have :)

It seemed to be unanimous online that gel coat needs a smooth surface or it will just bridge the gaps and...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

Thansk geehaw,

Looking more closely at the pictures there looks like there was signicantly more white when I started on the scratch, but as directed I feathered it out which thinned out the...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

I think having the vertical sides is a good idea because I'll build it up with the filler and then not have those blue lines. I'll try to slab on more gel coat and get it as covered as I can and if...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

It was 60 today which is why I gave it a shot. Won't be that warm again any time soon :(

I was wondering the same thing... :-/

This would be a big problem. Any way to confirm?

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

How do I add more coats when it is already too thick (again supposing I didn't go sand crazy and need to build up this whole area again)

I had to really heap it on to cover the spot and haven't...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

Hey there! Looks what happens when you leave me alone! :)

What do you mean by too thin? If I add more gel coat it is going to being a lump. Unless of course I went sand crazy and lowered this...

Re: Gel Coat Repair Flop (Pics)

Hello Rich,

That is what I did and the color mostly matches, but the problem is the blue border of the hole is visible.

It is possible that I have not added enough color since the gel is...
