Re: Electric Propulsion, Anyone Using It?

TakeFive,

A good rule of thumb is that it takes 400lbs of FLA batteries to replace one gallon of diesel on the boat.

My take is that for day sailors pure electric is a pretty compelling...

Re: Finding a good small boat for day sailing, trailering, or cartopper

I got to spend a lot of time looking at the RS line of boats, and while they may lack performance, they are well thought out and pretty well made.

New Boat

So I just finished the paperwork, and am going to pick up my new toy on Sunday.

A very good condition A-Class Catamaran!!! Not a foiler yet, but it has c boards and winglets, so its pretty close...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

Think of it this way.

If you are in the middle of the Atlantic and see an abandoned vessel would it be worth the trouble to take it under tow if you were going to get paid let's say double your...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

Salvage claim are based on the value of what was saved, not the cost of performing the salvage. Keep in mind the goal of salvage law is to actively encourage people to go rescue boats. The rewards...

Re: Main sheet location

I am not sure I am picturing this right, but you could set up a German system, or half German system, and just run the tails to two separate places.

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

It is called an "In Rem" action. Basically it is a suit against the thing, and is effective against everyone in the world (as opposed to normal litigation that is only effective against the people...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

And again i will point out that NONE OF THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT ROPE IS USED. Ensuring the claim will be treated as a tow and not a salvage claim is an issue of contract law, there is...

Re: drifter vs asymetrical spin

I keep this article bookmarked just in case someone brings up THE BLOOPER. I am too young to ever have sailed with one thank god.

Memories of a sail that lived up to its name in every way...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

Again who passes the line has zero effect on anything.

If you accept a tow (regardless of who's line it is) make sure it is a tow. That is all. Otherwise if your vessel is disabled it could...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

There is absolutely no difference in taking a line or giving a line from a salvage claim perspective. They use their lines because of work place safety issues, and not knowing what condition yours...

Re: Salvage claim in Louisiana against an abandoned sailboat

These types of claims are limited to the value of the boat. Presumptively the insurance company already paid the owner for the boat, so he is not likely out of pocket much if anything.

Re: Current production small boats

Gregg,

There are a lot of interesting new small boats built. But they are primarily racers. When it comes to small boats with a relatively high load capacity there just isn't a good way to design...

Re: Precision Sails or North Direct.....

Judy,

What you are describing is illegal. It is a violation of copywriter law and whoever owns the rights to those photographs could easily sure for infringement. Not my area of law, but I think...

Re: Current production small boats

The issue of course is that these older boats are still in pretty good shape, at least from a hull and rigging standpoint. But they have all been completely depreciated so they are relatively cheap....

Re: How to remove seacock without resorting to C-4

Have you tried a Thru Hull Wrench? Sometimes torquing them can help break them free. If it is a smooth bore you can try a large cammed pipe extractor for a plumbing supply place to get a grip on the...

Re: Thoughts on going from sailboat to motorboat?

You may also want to tak a look at some of the smaller power cats. I can recommend the Twin-Vee specifically. Fast, fuel efficient, very comfortable, and a lot of room for fishing.

Re: Boat Recommendations

The 88 is a whole different class of boats. You loose most of the interior, which is fine but it goes from a second home feel to camping.

In this class I would steal you towards the Seascape 27...

Re: What is "german style sheeting"?

The 'German' system just means the sheet travels to the gooseneck then down where it is trimmed. There are a number of variations on the system that all have their benefits. But the major advantage...

Re: How big to predrill for holes in fiberglass.

Not brad nails, brad point drill bits. I have never had then break on glass, kevlar, or carbon fiber. They even chew through G10 pretty well. The only issue is they do have a good bit of tear through...

Re: How big to predrill for holes in fiberglass.

I generally don't bother with a pilot hole in fiberglass unless I am protecting the core, or going to be using the pilot to center a bigger hole. I find brad point bits of the correct size work fine...

Re: Damaged Catalina 25 for a deal

Honestly with the damage right at the seam it is a structural repair it isn't just patching a hole. Add in that this was a crushing injury, which means that the visible damage is just the start of...

Re: AIS-B Installation and range

NEMA 0183 is a very slow connection its only 4800 baud. I am not enough of an expert to tell you, but it wouldn't surprise me if the slow connection could also be limiting the number of targets...

Re: AIS-B Installation and range

At the ranges you are giving how many targets are there? It is most likely a range issue but in very heavily trafficked areas the number of ships can also reduce the visible range.

The NAIS-300 is...
