Re: Daytime anchor ball

I read about a guy getting "pulled over" by harbor patrol Boothbay as he motored out and raised the main. Just got a warning. Can harbor patrol actually ticket? Or would this have to be marine...

Re: Herniated jibsheets

Paul,

How are you currently attaching the sheet? I use a lark's head and to make things easy, I have some whipping twine at the very midpoint of my sheet. (I re-rig every sail) So, in kind, could...

Re: Ice Box Rebuild

Check to see if it's moisture cured. Some expanding foams are. If it's too thick, the outside keeps the inside gooey for years.

Re: Daytime anchor ball

Am I the OP???? Inland waters? I don't think so. As soon as I get out of the river, I'm in the open Atlantic. That's 15 minutes off the dock. Only sailed a lake once. Quite boring. I dodge oil...

Re: New to Sailing

Tex,

There's some good advice for you. I was waiting to the old "You have to take ASA 101 through 10bazzillion, crew for 30 years at yacht club, then buy a 3 foot dinghy for best feedback, and...

Re: Ice Box Rebuild

I don't think so. There are 4 companies that own the rights of distributorship nationally, mine being one of the. I'm planning on a 5 fingered discount. Sheets of aerogel filled glazing are...

Re: Daytime anchor ball

OK, that's what I figured. I had in mind to make one out of hoops and cloth. Hoops would pivot, arranged like longitude lines. Flatten one way to store. Flatten the other way to create a cone....

Bulkhead compass

Considering replacing my compass with one that is marked around the perimeter, rather than the disk. Anybody have one collecting dust that they would be willing to part with or know of a salvage yard...

Daytime anchor ball

Anybody use them? How about the motor-saill marker? I have in mind to make one that does both. Is this a viable product for, say, $29?

Re: Sailing around the world on a Sunfish - non stop

I once cirumnavigated in a tiger striped thong and a wide brimmed hat for a sail. Wiggled my ears to trim. Skipped beer and food, Opted for krill.

Re: Appropriate Size cockpit tank for small outboard

I went through 13 gallons motoring on dead seas and dense then fighting 25 knot winds and 5 foot seas when a guy named Arthur passed by on the 4th. If you really don't have a huge sailing area, a...

Re: Just joined

Kapeman,

Buy the boat and start sailing. Don't loose even a second of sailing time with your kids. If you have some knowledge and common sense, it's time to complete your Triple Crown and get...

Re: Tig welders

I found this. Not sure what to make of it. I don't need to weld, myself. Anything I need, I mention to the guys in the shop at my company, and before lunch it's on my desk. Nice to be liked.

Re: Sailing Pants

I sail almost entirely in shorts and barefoot May thru November. No many in Maine will do that. Especially since I have to go at least to mid-thigh to launch. But, on occasion, like small craft...

Re: Fiberglass Bow Tip Repair

I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but my bow cap was destroyed; not by me but the PO. He had hidden the damage with black silicone so it looked pretty good, no, really. But as things aged...

Re: Butyl tape for port light sealing

My portlights have been watertight and sound for 5 years using 3M VHB tape and Dow 795 silicone. This is basically the same combo that keeps skyscraper windows from killing pedestrians. If your...

Re: Sudden inability to sail upwind

OK, try this one.

Ghosting alone, maybe 2 knots. The sails pull taunt. My son and I look at each other, then the boat heels hard to port and swings 30 degrees on its own. Then, rights itself and...

Re: Torn Main Can I Fix It?

Dude,

Don't listen to the naysayers. Go to Sailrite.com. They have all sorts of videos and all the supplies needed to make the repair. And mom's sewing machine will probably be just fine for...

Re: Safe mooring of new style boat

That's what the charter company taught us to do so I figure they're fairly concerned about their 1/4 million dollar boat in the hands of an unknown. If one line goes down, the other is still there....

Re: It's Time to Learn to Sail!

Sandy,

Welcome to the asylum. It seems you've
a) got your head on straight or
b) read my posts about buying a trailerable first.

Attaboy. Catalina 22, can't go wrong with that. I look...

Re: standing rigging replacement

J,

Lots of great info.

How deep are your pockets? Have a rigging shop do them, about $110 per line. Buy the wire rope and StaLok fittings. about $110 per line. The benefit of StaLok is...

Re: polycarbonate window thickness?

Never use a urethane base adhesive/sealant with poly or acrylic. It can/will case plasticizer migration and cause the glazing to craze. This could be anything from a cloudy appearance to spider...

Re: 1st Captain's Log

Barry,

#1 - Don't yell when anchoring. You'll look like a real jack-ass to those watching (and they will be watching). Cue her on hand signals and run thru it before you get there.

# 2 - Don't...
