Re: Salts in the oil

I am also a believer in oil analysis however most of the ones I have used are detailed enough to distinguish between saltwater or coolant intrusion. The company I use most often is Blackstone Labs....

A couple cans of Flex seal will do the trick.

Re: Sailing around the world on a Wrangler

Don't forget to install a winch. You can use that to troll for fish as you sail along. And if things get really bad you can use that to lasso the next super tanker that cruises by.

Re: Sailing around the world on a Sunfish - non stop

I never thought about hijacking a container. Brilliant! I think I would develop some kind of air lock so I can enter into the container and live off it's contents. Hopefully it is full of twinkies,...

Re: Varnish Blushing

My next coat will be number 6 (the blushing happened on #4.) I have found that 6 coats is a pretty good amount. I may try an extra one or two though. Can't hurt, might as well finish the can. I also...

Re: Varnish Blushing

Thankfully the sun goes down here around 9:35 so I have plenty of time before dark. I went down last night, did a light sanding and had it varnished by 7:00. Just checked on it at lunch and it looks...

Re: Bilge system in a small boat

On my Catalina 22 all I used was a hand pump and it worked fine. Keep it simple... If you really want to go the permanent route I would add a thru hull on the stern, centered, and above the water...

Re: The ULTIMATE Cooler...

They only wanted $50K and are currently at $1.1 million. I think it is safe to say this will see production.

Varnish Blushing

I am doing some varnishing on my boat. I checked the forecast and the overnight temp was supposed to be above the dew point so I thought I was in the clear. When I got back to the boat this morning I...

Re: Almost sank my boat... Prop Shaft - backup retainer?

Thanks for the tip on the set screws. I will be installing the collar this weekend so I will get new set screws too. The shaft does not have a significant amount of play. It took a couple light taps...

Re: Almost sank my boat... Prop Shaft - backup retainer?

Thanks for the replies. I think I will add the hose clamp now and order a clamp on collar. That will give me a lot more piece of mine and confidence next time I put it in reverse.

Almost sank my boat... Prop Shaft - backup retainer?

So, I almost sank my boat yesterday. I was doing some work on my engine and wanted to test it out. While still tied to the dock, I put it in forward and then reverse. As I was throttling up in...

Re: cost to seal through hulls and install a new backing plate

It could be bronze, not sure. It was a "yellow" metal and for the price I'm pretty sure it wasn't gold. I'm in a fresh water environment and they will be staying dry so it shouldn't be an issue...

Re: cost to seal through hulls and install a new backing plate

Exactly. That's why I did just that. Same piece of mind but reversible in just minutes.

Re: Cradle question

If they quote anywhere near 8 hours get a second opinion. I built my cradle from scratch in about 8 hours and I feel mine is way overbuilt compared to other ones in my marina. I would expect it to...

Re: Cradle question

Yes, there are a lot of guys who have mobile units mounted on their trucks. It would be very basic fabricating. Without seeing it I would think it could be done in an hour or two.

Re: cost to seal through hulls and install a new backing plate

The valves on my through hulls were threaded so I bought the corresponding brass plugs and now they are securely plugged but it can be reversed if need be down the road.

Cost: $10
Piece of mind...

Re: Cradle question

A picture would help a lot. I built my own cradle as well as a trailer for my 32 ft boat. Any welding shop should be able to modify your cradle. The adjustable pads are available individually for...

Re: Stuffing Box Packing size question

I'd love to measure it with the shaft in place but it is almost inaccessible. I can barely see it and have a difficult time even reaching it. Very poor design as far as engine access is concerned. I...

Here is a picture of the packing. In there now is 1/4". What do you think, 5/16" should cover it?

Re: Light, medium, or heavy oxidation?

Kind of hard to tell in the pictures but I would say it looks like light to medium to me. I have seen way worse. At least you still have some shine. I do like the 3M Restorer.
