Re: Hello from Florida ! My first sailboat !

Tony,
Congratulations on your new baby.

You might want to Google sailing schools in your area (there's quite a few). If you learn by being deck hand for a day you'll only learn what that sailor...

Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

Nancy, don't rule out production boats. There are some on SailNet that have a bias for/against certain brands; but the reality is you'll be day sailing, anchoring in a nice cove, cooking burgers and...

Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

Nancy, for the kind of sailing you described the Catalina 30 isn't a bad choice. I know you've been looking a while but I'm not sure if you've looked at them. A quick YachtWorld search turned up 32...

Re: Good old boat for newbie

With older boats condition usually trumps brand or model. Look for a boat in good overall condition.

An older boat that has been loved by it's owner will allow you to get out sailing and do less...

Re: How to get free internet on your boats.

Whoa, this isn't exactly Jesse James stuff here.

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

I agree with Smack on this one. It doesn't look like they're in immediate danger.

But I'll go back to a question I asked earlier - why not monitor their VHF? Mine is always on in scan mode when...

Re: Should I replace the headstay?

I found the same thing when we dropped our mast. It was caused by a halyard wrap and yes you should replace it. As others have said it's a safety issue.

Fitting a new stay with a Staylock fitting...

And fisherman LOVE to talk fishing.

Re: cleaning out water tanks

Hey Mike, I usually pick one up at the RV store at the beginning of each season. I've used the ShurFlor and the System IV brands. One or the other is usually on sale in the spring for around $25. I...

Re: Looking for any ideas ( Diesel smell & wood )

I had diesel smell in my galley cabinets after a diesel leak (the tank is behind the cabinets).

I took the whole cabinet unit out and washed down the frame and drawers using a bucket filled with...

Re: Smackdaddy needs your thoughts/prayers

Smack, enjoy the ride with your boys.

I know it sounds trite, but I'm amazed at how fast time has passed. Some of my best memories are of little things and small moments. Make time for them.

Re: anyone a surveyor in NJ? or can recommend

Boats aren't like cars. You need to read both policies and see what's really covered (liability, environmental, injury, etc.).

Tempest is correct. A $2,500 boat will be totaled in any kind of...

Re: Catalina or Hunter?

If I was looking at 34-36 footers in the $50K range as a liveaboard I'd be concerned with the following:

How comfortable is the boat both down below and in the cockpit. Are there "nooks" where you...

Re: Boat registration NY/NJ

Regor, don't make it more complicated than it needs to be. If the boat will be berthed in NJ you need to register the boat in NJ.

When you register the vessel you will either need to pay the sales...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

Hey Scott, no offense meant. My thought is that if you find sailing's not your thing you can resell a good boat for what you have in it. You'd likely take a hit on a fixer-upper and/or find it harder...
