Re: My new dinghy, thank you

If you're sitting aft, I'm guessing the bow would rise about 5 feet in the air at full throttle. At max load, I think you'd crack the transom. 4 hp is plenty and I think the max rating is around 6.

Re: Starting to look for a boat

My wife and I had a 31' coastal cruiser before we had kids and we kept it until #2 came along, at which point it was more trouble than enjoyment for her as she'd be kid wrangling while I worked the...

Re: Water Heater: 5 or 6.5 Gallons?

In this day and age, an anti-scald valve should be considered mandatory. It doesn't add much cost or complexity to the install.

Re: West Marine BIG sale on line

Wasn't looking for three strand. Eight and 12 strand brait are much harder to come by on sale and the Chinese don't make knockoffs yet.

Re: West Marine BIG sale on line

Thanks, Barry. I bought 150 feet of 5/8" NER Mega Plait anchor rode for $1.15/ft. That's 20% cheaper than anywhere else I've found.

Re: How : Diesel lines without lift pump ?

Same here with a Yanmar 4JH3-HTE. That said, I am adding an electric in-line pump to facilitate system bleeding when I change filters and also so I can polish my own fuel without running the engine.

Re: smallest electric start?

This. I've got the 2014 4 stroke version of this motor and my 11 year old can start it (and carry it) without issue. It's got pretty high compression, so it's best to pull the cord like you mean it...

Re: whisker pole topping lift - to mast or cockpit?

Mast. You gotta be there to set/douse the pole anyway.

Re: latest and greatest binoculars?

I think the best bang for the buck out there at the moment is the Nikon Monarch 5.

Re: Question regarding Rocna Anchor's Roll Bar

Nobody said anything about voyaging, just spend a few nights on the hook on our Salish Sea every once in a while if you want to be taken the least bit seriously. I do just that, but I don't presume...

Re: Question regarding Rocna Anchor's Roll Bar

I'd give you more credit if you could get off the dock. I've been reading your blog for a couple of years and for all your talk about your sailing prowess, it seems that you've always got a...

Re: Questions on the Catalina 445

Good to know you like the thruster remote. It's on the project list, there are just a bunch of things above it!

I think Melrna got a shoal draft 445 and she says it's pretty stiff (10-15 degree...

Re: Dinghy mods

I think you'll find the tube design is very similar to your concept. It rides just above the water (static) but provides very good flotation as soon as the hull tilts by 5 degrees or so. Because the...

Re: Dinghy mods

I'd go for a Walker Bay 10' with the tubes for <$1K on Craigslist. It'd do everything you want except for the remote steering.

Re: Questions on the Catalina 445

I don't know what kind of sailing you like to do, how many people you routinely carry, etc., etc., but if you like your 36 and it serves your needs, the 385 will give you the build quality of the 445...

Re: Propane brands advice

I don't believe ABYC allows any connections between the tank and the point of use. If you have intermediate connections, it's a VERY good idea to replace the line with a continuous run.

Re: Propane brands advice

The PO of my boat did a clever thing. He put the sensor below the gimballed oven and then installed a tall fiddle to fill the lower half of the gap between the hull liner and the bottom of the oven....

Re: Mast steps

FWIW, I bought a boat with a few of those SeaDog folding aluminum steps already installed by the PO about 10 years prior. On this boat, they give you a boost so you can reach the top of the stackpack...

Re: Rebel Heart Lawsuit Dismissed

Clearly, they've got a first-rate attorney. Sounds like they did as much vetting of him as they did of their vessel.

Re: I hate boats...

If you're trying to drive a 140A alternator with twin V belts, it can be a problem. You need both belts to carry comparable loads and any size difference between them will cause one belt to wear...

The Lehman's a beast and I'm sure it'll serve you well for the foreseeable future. Can't wait to see you on the water. Please plan a trip down to Seattle as a shakedown and we'll raise a glass on me!
