Re: Greenport Summer Slip Marina Recommendations

Yes I am aware of the driving situation, done it a few times actually, and this wouldnt be an every weekend sort of thing prob a once a month thing. Plus every year I take a 5-10 day cruise to new...

Greenport Summer Slip Marina Recommendations

I rented a transient slip at Townsend Marina this past season, and loved Greenport so I want to move my C&C 32 there next summer. Basically I will drive in from Jersey City for the weekends, that's...

Re: Aluminium boat.

Yeah seems a little small for an aluminum design, tubby and heavy and aluminum is not easy to weld right (and it better be done right, unlike steel). Pretty amazing project to complete at home.

Re: Why I sail small boats

I live directly in the Sandy flood zone and had no problem insuring my boat for its value. Skisafe (from Geico) had the best rates.

Re: Presto 36 Munroe/Parker design, Seaworthy??

To the Bahamas in calm conditions (a daysail basically), but not much further than that.

They lack righting moment, that's the problem. Not quite self-righting from a broach.

Re: Why I sail small boats

Daysailing is far more pleasurable in small boats I think. There is a certain size that is big enough to not worry about capsize and be able to make a cup of coffee down below, yet small enough to...

Re: Presto 36 Munroe/Parker design, Seaworthy??

Seems to have a relatively low 33% ballast to displacement ratio, and the lead isn't very far down, so I would watch the forecast

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

Anyway, I'm not sure I would be comfortable handling a 55' sloop by myself relying on electric winches etc. But generally bigger has to be better for ocean sailing to a point. I find my fathers 32'...

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

It is amazing to me that an electric motor would be mounted at the end of the boom... First the weight and stress on the gooseneck that it must cause, ie in an accidental crash jibe. And second, how...

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

I don't know what these people are talking about, marine systems are reliable? Not my experience nor that of anyone i know or race with.

Then again i have never owned a bavaria swan etc, maybe...

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

On my recent Block Island trip, we were 30 miles from shore when we lost all instruments, including chartplotter and AP. Turns out a leaky stanchion post shorted the entire system. We were able to...

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

For every story of a crazy feat, I will give you three of small boats with insufficient RM sinking after broaching badly in coastal conditions. There are boats smaller than 22' but with enough rm to...

Re: Sailing, safety, & size

At a certain point a boat is too small, gotta have a certain amount of rm and anything under say 22' loa prob just won't have it. When the boat broaches, it must have enough weight in the keel at 90...

Re: Some sailing with dolphins (video)

I'm pretty sure it was stock on this boat, not quite sure why they did it that way but it makes mounting an anchor roller impractical.

The boat is a "racer-cruiser" in the true sense of the term,...

Some sailing with dolphins (video)

Did a double handed trip from New York Harbor to Block Island and back, on the ocean side, a couple weeks ago. Dolphins start around 1:30.

Inflatable kayak as a small boat tender

Over the past three years I have tried various solutions to the dinghy-on-a-small-boat problem.

My Hunter 25 is too small to realistically store a hard dinghy on the foredeck.

The inflatable...

Ritchie Compass.

I got one of their bulkhead mount "explorer" compasses, which is on the lower end of their range. A few days after I installed it I noticed that it was missing fluid, and when I...

6hp outboard for a 25' boat?

Past similar threads have had mixed answers.

Boat is hunter 25, 4400# planned displacement. Motor mostly used to get in and out of the marina, but occasionally against a 2 -2.5 knot current. I...

Re: Dousing headsails in breeze when the main is down?

That's nice! does it interfere with the aerodynamics of the jib though, right along the luff like that?

Re: Dousing headsails in breeze when the main is down?

Do you tighten the jib sheets before blowing the halyard and pulling on the down haul? Where on the jib is the down haul attached, halfway up the luff or all the way at the head?

I feel like...

Dousing headsails in breeze when the main is down?

So it seems many cruisers take down the main entirely and run twin headsails, or a headsail and an assymetric, kite, for ddw passages.

I just learned that running under a small headsail only, no...

Re: Material for use as stiffener in sunbrella winch handle holder (diy)

Bleach bottle sounds like the right type of plastic how did I not think of that lol

The vinyl and Old laminate sails are a good idea too because you can sew through them, but I don't know if my...

Material for use as stiffener in sunbrella winch handle holder (diy)

After my very successful new mainsail cover project, I want to make a cockpit sheet bag that has a winch handle holder incorporated into it, maybe a beer holder too.

To make the winch handle...
