Re: Is the Newport 27' a suitable liveaboard for a small family?

Stepford Children perhaps?

Something tells me you are expecting way too much from your children. I'm not so sure they will ever have the choice to live their lives as they choose as...

Re: Is the Newport 27' a suitable liveaboard for a small family?

I love it! I can relate though, one asks a question anticipating sound advice and gets barraged with Smart Alec remarks from people who feel the need to belittle those who are in need of advice....

Re: Important boat stuff you forget

Pre-sail:
"Honey - I think I left the Gennaker sheets at home! That's OK, I'll just use the Spinnaker sheets"

Post Sail:
"I'll put the Gennaker back in the bag Honey..."

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

We reefed Saturday!

Used the middle reef point, took about 5 extra minutes to put it in at the slip. Wind was around 8ish knots, and there was a noticable speed difference (slower) with...

Downwind Sailing

OK, I'll open myself up to more abuse!

I find that my boat does not like running when sailing downwind. A beam reach to broad reach at most and she is fine. But a run with wind...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

Now that's what I'm talking about - a bit of sarcasm, a bit of advice...

Never been smoked by anything on Cayuga lake. Never. However, that new Colgate that is giving me a run for my money

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

The Honda and the 74 1/2 MGB have taken a back seat to sailing. Luckily, we live in upstate NY, so my son and I can still enjoy downhill skiing 3 times a week after sailing season (he races on the...

What do you do for food on a day cruise?

We usually bring sandwiches or wraps, and olives, cheese, etc...

But I have seen so many folks with hibachi's on the back rail...

So, should day sailing be a gourmet event or not?

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

Answer to my own question...

For tying the sail to itself. Why not on the boom - to keep the loose footed dynamic?

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

Yep, I used to race J24's but I was on the foredeck. With a crew of 2 things are not as easy. But thanks for your advice - seriously.

I posted a question, about 50% of the people responded with...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

I, however (ask my Fiancé) speak "Thinganise" and usually people don't know what I am talking about. You know "Did...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

I do appreciate your candor - and your advice.

But to clarify - no inexperience. My Main sail (Harken) has brass reinforced holes along each reef point for tying down the loose footed sail to the...

3 other things in my talk that get ignored when we are out with non-sailors:

1) Please don't sit on the sheets (I explain what sheets are)
2) Please move to the windward side of the boat after we...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

Nothing "stupid" about not reefing in 13 knots without whitecaps on a racing boat. READ. MY. POST. This entire subject has to do with why I needed to reef yesterday in 13 knots, but normally do...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

Two Jiffy reef lines inside the boom, running to cleats at the mast and a single line at the aft end of the boom (iow two big reefs and a small reef).

Best to reef at the dock, then shake it out...
