Re: ticking sound in great salt pond

Aka Pistol Shrimp. First time we heard them, in Marina Del Rey, I was tossing aside cushions & gear: it sounded like the entire hull was delaminating. Took awhile to learn it was shrimp on the...

Re: Anemometer for a wind voyeur....

Most home weather stations -- esp. wireless -- offer fairly low resolution. For instance, our Zephyr Instruments (a re-labeled older design) only polls every 45 seconds or minute. Seen fractally,...

Re: Sudden inability to sail upwind

It seems unlikely Minne inverted the boat past 150* and forgot to mention that.;) And since the C22 keel weighs 800lbs, it probably did not spontaneously sweep back on its own, as a dinghy...

Re: Sailing South Dakota Style

Fun! You must be familiar with those little wind bomblets that start around 1PM & arrive w/ no warning ... 45kts from a random direction. :) Bet that's interesting if it happens in the middle of a...

Re: F/G burns really well once it gets going

By the time the contents of your boat are burning hot enuf to ignite an aluminum flybridge, you are well into 'total writeoff' territory. The real lesson here has zippo to do with fiberglass, or...

Re: Happy sailstice!!!

We did some turns on the local lake, trying to remember how to sail. 6kts, 18kts, 6kts.... Felt like we never had the right sail out for conditions. Nasty clouds over Sheep Mountain sent us...

Re: F/G burns really well once it gets going

Just to clarify: Polar Bear is/was a steel-hulled boat with aluminum superstructure, built in 2011 by Citadel Yachts (http://www.superyachts.com/motor-yacht-4536/polar-bear.htm). There may or may not...

Re: Getting into a Good , Cheap, Old Boat

Still the best value on the street. Albin Vegas have possibly more ocean miles logged per dollar spent than any other sailboat. Amazing where those things have got to. Takes a certain type of person...

Re: Boats like S&S 34

:laugher Always, in every case. With all due respect.:laugher

Another comparable S&S design is the SHE 31 or 33 (http://sparkmanstephens.blogspot.com/2011/06/she-33-design-2291.html) (pronounced...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

The O'Day might be a fine choice, but budget in at least a new (or good/used) mainsail for it. The number of tears & their location (leech) indicate badly damaged fabric. Probably a combination of...

Re: Defend Defender!

I'm glad Home Depot exists. It spares me from dealing with a certain type of customer. HD is glad I exist; that way, they don't have to accommodate wacky requests that would screw up their stores' &...

Re: Defend Defender!

Defender has been Defender since 1938. Their business model has worked for them for 76 years. Part of running any business is deciding what you do, and perhaps more importantly, what you don't do....

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

Nancy, another common boat in your size range, price range, and region is the famous Shark 24 (http://www.shark24.org/). It's a quirky little boat, likes a blow, might need some light air help. But...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

Up in that region, the Sirius 21/22 (http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=170) is a common boat and very much admired. Easily trailed (swing keel version), good sailing qualities, and...

Re: Really? Oregon, really?

One of the issues with harbor-hopping down the Oregon/NorCal coast is the frightful entrances to many of the harbors. Bars, rocks, windward exposures, large tidal rips.... Basically, the sort of...

Re: Fresh Water Tank Vent Strainer

We'll be putting a screen on ours. Save a cockroach! ;) Here's a thought to prevent overfilling, for those with internal vents: what about a ball-float check valve in the vent line? Air goes around...

Re: Fresh Water Tank Vent Strainer

It is probably a good idea -- tho bugs are not gonna hurt you.;) W drink & cook with rainwater here, and more than a few crawlies get past the screen. Dead mice, those get kinda rancid. We try to...

Re: Something about the fractional rig that I just don't get...

I've read the claim that a fractional rig is not a masthead rig with a short jib; it is a masthead rig with a tall main. That is, think of the hoist above the forestay tang as free mainsail area. ...

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

Very useful things to have aboard, and they hold a charge for a long time. An example of how they can patch problems: My van broke its serpentine belt many miles out of town. No alternator=no...

Eneloops are NiMH. Not NiCad, but NiMH.

Minne: Name brand disposable alkaline batts also have good self-discharge rates. If you look on the package, you'll see a sell-by date on Duracell or...

Re: Go Green, Cruisers!!!

I like NiMH batteries and use them a bunch, but they do have one quirk that makes them problematic: they are not 1.5VDC. Nope. Because of their chemistry, most only output 1.2VDC (Enloop is ~1.4V)....
