Re: What the heck am I doing?

Matt you are in San Diego not Phoenix, there are thousands of perfectly good sailboats floating very near to you, you don't need to resurrect a derelict from the desert.

That's the part you...

Re: Rights during USCG Inspection.

I guess I didn't realize it was the principle of being "boarded" without probable cause that was the basis for your objections.
Personally I wouldn't expect the need for probable cause to be much of...

Re: Rights during USCG Inspection.

You are not going to avoid the USCG by avoiding US waters, the CG will simply be bringing the Mounties with them.

Re: Rights during USCG Inspection.

Actually no, I was motoring into the harbor last time I was "boarded" and once I gave them my ID they just had me continue on my way while I held up various pieces of gear. They did not cite me for...

Re: Is it possible to travel by (own) ship as a rule?

Yes, but you'd be better served with something like a Nordhavn than a sailboat, and your still only going to average about 6 kts. at 1.6 to 2 GPH.
My wife wants a 40' "baby Nordie" when we retire...

Re: This guy should have known better

The area is known as "The Smugglers Corridor", it would be more unusual to not have some sort of contact under those circumstances.

Re: Leather Disgrace

I've also been using half finger bicycling gloves, practically indestructible when used for sailing, don't let the secret out, if they find we've been using them in a "marine" application they'll...

The square white covers are no longer available and hard to replace, the later gray covers that are slightly rounded on the bottom edge are available on Amazon, fleabay and various chandleries.

Re: Auto Pilot on Catalina 28

They have worked well on Catalina 270's, 30's and 320's I've sailed when the settings have been adjusted to the "Catalina Cocktail" as recommended by Raymarine. First, what do you mean by "not...

Re: Catalina 30', How seaworthy?

Actually, doing a Transpac defines the sailor as being "bluewater capable" around here so I don't see why it wouldn't apply to the boat as well. If George or I had blogs nobody would read them, "I...

Re: New sailor/new boat

That's a fun two day trip, you better plan for about 10 to 14 days without a motor however. You need to go about 120 NM at 300 degrees then 20 miles at 30 degrees, wind blows (lightly) from about...

Re: solid vs inflatable dinghy

They float upside down and don't fill with water, and can be self-bailing when towed. Also falling into an inflatable head first after a "tough" night in town is usually less injurious.
