Re: Volvo Problems

I would just add that some steam, is normal, at least here in the cool northwest.

Re: Islander 30 Mk II Tanks

I'd love to see photos. This is how my '75 is configured, though the tank is about 3.5 gallons.

I almost lost a chain plate last night (port side due to rot), so I have a little work to do. I'm...

Re: How Does Your Islander Sail?

That is interesting. I'm still pretty green and my 1975 30-2 isn't set up very conveniently for reefing, so I don't very often and experience pretty significant weather helm after about 12 knots, but...

Re: New favorite interior teak oil-Weiman vs. Formby

Thanks for the tip. I had similar experience with the Formby's. I was just about to start varnishing.

Re: Mounting Tacktick Display

I'm in agreement with the sentiments above. 5200 can be more permanent than screws. Have you thought of VHB? (Commercial double sided sticky tape from 3M) They use it to attach glazing to port light...

Re: Cedar Eyebrows?

I'm going to be doing the same thing on Sojourn shortly. The lumber yard I go to says Sapele (pronounced Sa-Peely) seems to be the species of choice among local boat builders these days. It's a...

Re: Turbo charged diesel

In a diesel it is more meaningful to use the term 'power setting' which as you point out, isn't necessarily proportional to governed RPM or what most people think of as throttle. To reach 100% power...

Re: Turbo charged diesel

Steel, you have no idea what you are talking about.

If your sailboat smokes at 80% throttle, something is amiss, likely the prop pitch. The smoke only happens on a properly setup diesel when...

Re: Turbo charged diesel

In short reliability and fuel consumption. Try running your Harley at 80% WOT for 10K hours. It would be lucky to make it 500 hours. A properly maintained diesel will commonly go 10K hours, 20...

Re: Solar chimney

No first hand experience with this, but I'm a mechanical engineer and took heat transfer 101 almost 2 decades ago. You can't heat the air directly with sunlight as it is transparent. You can...

Re: Bristol Finish in humidity

No first hand experience, but I doubt it. Unlike water based paint, Bristol doesn't dry, it cures and gives of some solvent. I'd be interested to hear about your general experience. I find...

Re: Why does my diesel not rev when in gear?

I forgot to mention one other thing that sometimes contributes to not reving - plugged exhaust. I've not experienced it, but a friend suffered it last summer. It would restrict air flow effectively...

Re: Why does my diesel not rev when in gear?

I have much experience with this engine and at least half of your symptoms. Disclosure: in the end, I raised the figurative radiator cap, removed my Volvo and inserted a Beta.

The starting...

Re: Propane Stove - Dickenson or Force 10?

My mistake. Perhaps they sold off their heater business as a separate entity. I tried to get replacement parts and was told to go to Sig Marine. Sig/Dickenson now sell the cozy cabin heater.

Re: Propane Stove - Dickenson or Force 10?

Force 10 was bought out by Dickenson. Force 10 parts have been obsoleted in some cases. I was told that I had to by a whole burner assembly for $200 when I inquired about a burner cap. ...

Re: Changing out the Engine Instruments

Mine worked only intermittently. When I re-powered, my beta came with a VDO 304813 viewline series. They can be had at defender.com. You can tap into one of the alternator field wires to run it or...

I'm pretty sure I have a copy. It may be a week or two before I can get to the marina and make a copy. Shoot me a message and I'll email it to you when I get a chance.

There's a guy near me who clips a light onto his spinnaker track. No idea if it meets the letter of the law or not.
