Re: Happy Canada Day...

Darn nice country ya got there. Love to sail over to your "tropics" - i.e., Pelee Island.
I was a (1813) Battle of Lake Erie reenactor last summer.
To bad you guys did not win that round -...

Re: Crewed for the first time yesterday - wow!

Good one "Dod" - and I have also been the butt of other jokes, like when people ask when I'm going to add elbow pads and a crash helmut to my sailing attire. Hmmmm, do ya think . . . . ?

Re: Crewed for the first time yesterday - wow!

We took a newbie with us last night racing Jib & Main on Sandusky Bay aboard my S2 7.9. I think he had fun - esp. since we won majorly.
We always seem to do better when we take a newbie along -...

Re: Canada Cruising Permits for US Boats

On a related issue, do not fail to check in with Canadian customs, or head directly to a port of entry and check in there, any time you enter Canadian waters. $ 1,000 fine if you do not.
Crossing...

Re: Getting into sailing

Yup, there are folks who would really rather work on a boat than sail it. I am not one of them.

Re: A survey is not poetry

Another issue with surveys is the romantic rose-colored glasses that some buyers have which prevent them from fully grasping the importance of the flaws that are revealed. In my case, although the...

Re: Why do skippers yell?

Well, you could do it this way . .
"3. yelling, derogatory or gratuitous abuse - drink their beer at the end of the day and never sail with them again"
But at one of our Club regattas, the...

Re: What would you do? Caught off guard by storm on the Chesapeake

Good advice - about the only thing I would add is to securely close/lock the lazarette latches. If you get a big, big puff and are knocked down, and if your boat is like mine (S2 7.9), it will sink...

Re: stabilizing the boat?

Agree that the FJ is not for you. But if you do keep it, flotation to the mast head is a good safety mod. Yes, you will totally get wet.

Re: Caught running aground

the "less patient yacht" could have come up behind the folk boat VERY SLOWLY and offered a tow. I hope he's still stuck in the mud.

Re: Prices

It's worth it to pay somewhat more for a boat that is in good or excellent shape. You can't believe the time and money required to bring a "beater" (car talk?) up to sailing ready condition. Double...

But seriously, check out Great Lakes (CLE) beers - best IPA's around.
And Chilean Carmonere . .

Re: Know the rules!

I'd go further. The only sensible approach to take on the water is the same one to take while driving - that they're all trying to kill you.

Re: Weather helm and Weight

Don't know about Bendy-Toes, but for some boats weather helm can be greatly reduced (and pointing much improved) by raking the mast farther aft. I know this seems counter-intuitive (shouldn't more...

Re: munich member to this forum

The Bavarians were incredibly kind to me when I was in the Freistadt as a callow youth in the US Army around 1970. If you ever get to the Great Lakes, stop by for a sail. I'm gonna splash my S2 7.9...

Re: What is the lightest wind I can sail in?

For light air lots of folks also use very light genoa sheets - big fat strong ones weigh enough to adversely affect sail shape. Same goes for spin sheets.
It's fun and challenging to sail and...
