Re: Worst Event During a Sail

I don't have a "worst". Sure there were some gear failures and some scary water and wind, but no one has ever been hurt or the boat(s) badly broken (except for the 420 that I dismayed).

But. if...

Re: How Old is Your Boat

VICTORIA is 31 YO and like Faster says, we too get comments about how she doesn't look her age. She's aging gracefully and can hold her own on a race course when her crew lives up to her lines. In...

Anchoring in Cod Harbor, south of Tangier Island

If you're looking for a nearby place to shelter, just go into Tangier Harbor. We've weathered several blows there. I suggest entering from the east side as its less of a run from Cod.

Re: Use of mainsail

You ask two questions.

Yes, people will sometimes use the the genoa. Sometimes for convenience, sometimes when blowing. With just the genoa beware of lee helm. We don't get much lee helm but...

Re: Anchoring in Cod Harbor, south of Tangier Island

Absolutely! When our daughter was 9 she voted the crab cakes the best on the Bay and 11 years later still holds to her "review". Kind of funny... it looks like it's falling into the marsh but has...

Re: Anchoring in Cod Harbor, south of Tangier Island

Probably lumpy too, being on the edge of the deep water of Tangier Sound and so near the light.

I can think of 1000 better places on the Bay to put a hook. :)

Anchoring in Cod Harbor, south of Tangier Island

Been to Tangier many, many times. Never anchored in Cod Harbor (not really a harbor). Too exposed. Anyway, there isn't that much to see that far south on the island. Mostly marsh. Why not go into the...

Re: True and Apparent Wind Question

If you have an iPhone, use iSailor or iNavx. Indispensable for quick navigation.

No. Not even close. Like comparing apples and tubas.

Re: VOR "Chinese gybe"

It certainly is. I've done a few myself, but not in the dark, with 40 kts wind, and with a canting keel. That will definitely get your attention.

Re: Winch covers--are they worth it?

Winch covers will never blow off if made with a bungee cord on an inside flap that goes around the winch.

I made a full set but stopped using them a couple of years ago. I don't think that they...

Can You Tell Us About the Chesapeake and Annapolis?

Ummmm, don't believe anyone who tells you the Bay is as cold as NY! No way. Yeah it froze during a cold snap but we generally have comparatively short, relatively mild winters. For most people, the...

Re: 2015 Sailing Season on the Chesapeake

I'm on the Yeocomico. Eleven days ago, I went down and shoveled the last 8" and raised the boat an inch or so. And we have a cover. Ice was solid across the creek. Fortunately, Olverson's has...

Re: Team Vestas Wind grounded in the VOR

I've had the same feeling. During the last 2 editions I followed the race daily and sailed a virtual boat for most of the legs. I love the fact that they went with a class boat to level the field. ...

Re: 10 weeks to splash - will it ever get here?

Normally, it would be 6 weeks with a couple of those painting and waxing. But this year, I'm going to be on the sidelines for a while recovering from ACL and meniscus surgery. Blew out my knee...

Re: Potomac or Rappahannock?

Too crowded up north, IMO. I'm not one of the people that hates to see other people, quite the contrary. But jeez, the powerboat wakes up there kill a nice day's sailing. Solomons south to Norfolk...

Re: Potomac or Rappahannock?

What I don't like about the Potomac is that it takes several hours from our dock to get into the Bay itself. Other than that, it's fine when it's not angry. St. Mary's is beautiful and we've had...

Re: Help me teach my wife navigation

Denise said it perfectly. You wife doesn't see why she needs the skill. On our boat, I do most of the navigation, but Vicky can get us home if she needs to. So keep it simple, stress that's it's...

New favorite interior teak oil-Weiman vs. Formby

Wow. That's a shocking picture and I can see why you're so negative toward the finish. In this case, I'm virtually certain the reason is that the wood had a lot of moisture in it and / or the...

Re: New favorite interior teak oil-Weiman vs. Formby

I agree that something else must have been going on for the poly to fail. When I bought them, both my Sabres had no finish but the POs had used oil on the interiors. I sanded with acetone, sanded...

Re: Production buckets and the limits

I use a Lowes-type bucket in which Sampson sold the anchor line that we used for our last boat. But the wire handle was prone to coming off when dipping the bucket at 5 knots. So I replaced it...

Re: Buying my first boat please help

Agree with all. While some people hate brokers, on our current boat our broker negotiated MORE off the price than I asked based on the survey results. He was extremely helpful and found us a great...

Re: What to do what to do :)

You mentioned the Sabre 28, so I'll jump in.

We had one for 15 years and I don't think that my wife ever slept in the V berth. She and I always slept in the pull out settee in the main cabin. The...

Agree with all.

Call/ email Sabre. They definitely will reply.

Ditto the mast step problem. Our 38 seems to have had the problem but the PO fixed it and put in a new teak/ holly floor. I...
