Re: Newport RI Boat Show Discussion

I went on Thursday, the "VIP Day," and felt that the lack of crowds and the ability to actually climb aboard the boats without having to wait in line is worth the extra admission price. Besides, the...

Re: LED flex strips

I installed waterproof 12-volt Lamplux LE flexible LED strips in the main cabin a month ago. Opted for the 5050 size (brighter) with peel-and-stick back. One 16-ft strip (comes rolled up on a reel)...

Re: Waterway Guide Beats Active Captain

I've tried Waterway Guide and, in my area (southern New England) at least, I think I'll stick with ActiveCaptain.

Reason: the crowd-sourced ActiveCaptain reviews---some insightful, some just...

Re: Poll: Baltimore as a Destination

With a rate of 1,405 violent crimes per 10,000 population, Baltimore ranks sixth in the U.S., after Detroit, Oakland, St. Louis, Memphis, and Stockton.

Overall, the U.S. violent crime rate is 387...

Re: Long Island (and slightly east) anchorages

Go to and launch the Interactive Cruising Guidebook. All the green spots (anchorages) on the map have user-posted reviews. Click on the reviewer's name and you can get an idea...

Re: Poll: Baltimore as a Destination

Other reason ->
The attraction of a city destination is the vibrancy.
With all the post-riot cancellations of conventions, and the concomitant emptying of downtown hotel rooms, I'm afraid that the...

Re: Defender's Annual Warehouse Sale!

The downside is that now, after the sale is over, they're backlogged shipping stuff.

Today, two days after the sale finished, I ordered a couple of plumbing items online, expecting the usual quick...

Re: NY/CT/LIS Boatyard & Marina help?

Mamaroneck. For sure.
Go to and check out the marinas and yacht clubs surrounding a well-protected harbor, all no more than a five-block walk from the Metro North train station.

Re: Will 5 hp work on my 25 Catlina.

For what it's worth, my Catalina 25 had a diesel (about 20% of them did), and it was 12 hp. Most use a 9.9 long shaft.

Re: Dinghy theft protection

I hide a battery-operated personal alarm inside the equipment bag that's lashed inside the dinghy's bow. It's connected to the sailboat by a slack thin monofilament fishing line. The mono is longer...

Re: Destep or not Destep?

On a previous boat, I dropped the mast the first winter after I bought it, and I was glad I did! Turned out that under previous ownership someone had installed the forestay to the top of the mast...

Re: What to know about a raw water cooled Universal

Check for wobble in the raw-water-pump shaft.
That pump is a direct drive from a shaft internal to the engine. I had the seals go on a 23-year-old Universal M-12 diesel, and seawater got into the...

Question AM/FM with nonvolatile presets?

I'm loathe to hook up anything directly to the battery (except the bilge pump, of course). That includes the trickle to the radio that keeps alive the stations I've loaded into memory buttons.

Re: Engine room cleanup - better way?

Once you get it clean, an epoxy barrier coat is a good idea.

Or you might try Interlux Bilgekote, available in white or grey. The paint worked well for me.

Thing is, my yacht club...

Re: bilge water

An added advantage of running a bilge pump into the cockpit: If your feet suddenly get wet, it's a dead giveaway that something needs attention.

Re: What to upgrade on these older electronics

I second Sabreman's suggestion.

DMI rebuilt the Datamarine depth gage on my Cat25, and I was very happy with the outcome.

Re: Fresh water for toilet

The culprit in the smell department isn't so much seawater in the holding tank but seawater (avec critters) sitting in the bowl and in the line going into the bowl. So flushing with fresh water will...
