Re: Which lines to test? Abrasion testing.

I'm glad that geeks like you are around so I can just read about it on the internet and then sound like an expert when I'm out walking the docks spewing "wisdom". :)

Re: anyone who's done the trip from long beach to catalina. feedback please

Those big cargo ships are REALLY fast. You'll see more than one going across. Stay out of their path because you don't know if there's a competent captain at the wheel or an 18 year old who can't...

Re: anyone who's done the trip from long beach to catalina. feedback please

I was able to get a data signal all the way between MDR & Isthmus Cove and almost all the way back down to Newport. There were a couple miles in the middle that we didn't have a signal on the second...

Re: anyone who's done the trip from long beach to catalina. feedback please

That boat will be great when it's smooth. Leave really late or really early on both sides and you'll have a good trip. We have a lot of nav stuff onboard. If you have an Andriod or Apple device with...

Re: What Boat And Why

If I trip over a quarter million dollars, I'll get a big cat. Catanas look great and I've seen some truly fantastic cats by smaller builders. If I trip over a hundred thousand I'll buy a new dinghy...

Re: Wire halyard through random block.

I agree with you but there is one other reason to use wire/rope halyards. Because I got 3 brand new 100'ers for $75.00. Not each, for the three of them. :)

Re: spent 5 months cruising, and want MORE. Any one Info on Ta Chiao 38 ?

How many people are you, what age, and what's your budget? Where do you plan to cruise? You said all over, did you mean circumnavigate?

Re: Have You Ever Been Cited For Any Radio Violation?

I meant any radio violation at all. Any kind of radio. Even if somebody might have been caught broadcasting from a marine VHF on land, HAM, SSB, VHF, whatever.

Have You Ever Been Cited For Any Radio Violation?

A VHF specific thread on CF brought this to mind. If you talk to HAMs they'll all tell you that you will be cited for various things if you break the rules. I'm not advocating breaking the rules here...

Re: Do dock lines go with the boat?

I'd break an aluminum boat pole on him.

Re: Mast Paint Colour

If you take it down and spray it, you can chose from any number of automotive paints. You can even take a piece of wood into the auto body supply and have them take a picture with their color code...

Re: Look at this bleed through...

The tops of the keel bolts can look nice and clean but it's the part below the nut & washer (or head, as the case may be) that corrodes and breaks. Crevice corrosion.

Re: More ballast

It's best to keep the extra weight in the center. That helps when either end of the boat pitches. Weight in the ends bakes the downward part of that end's motion worse than without the weight. I keep...

Re: Stuck valves

You might try running synthetic oil in it once and see how it does. Some old engines don't like it and some do. It doesn't get gummy like dino oil. That's the only thing that I'll use on something...

Re: Yanmar parts prices!

It's like that all over. Porsche synchro rings that were $12.00 in 2002 are $95.00 now. I was glad that I had collected a bunch of old Porsche stuff that nobody wanted much years ago, when we started...

Re: Using Bottom Paint on Brass Propeller

Slightly off topic, but my friends were stuck in one spot at anchor for 3 months with a dead engine. She put pieces of nylon stockings on the blades to protect them. After all that time, the nylon...

Re: Teak crack

After the Gorilla Glue in there, I don't imagine that any other glue will stick well. It will turn into a glue burrito from hell. Well, maybe a glue quesadilla is a more apt description.
I think...

Re: Cutting a through-hull for bilge pump outlet

Drill an 1/8" hole first. If you make a mistake, it's really easy to fix with a dab of Splash Zone or similar.

Re: Mexico For Refit?

Get the parts first. If it's not made in Mexico or China, it's expensive here.
Bottom job, fiberglass work, and bimini upholstery will probably be cheaper here, but again, bring the stuff that you...

Re: Repair 4 hp two stroke ?

I was pretty sure that I was making a mistake when I bought a 20 year old 2-stroke Nissan 9.9 with almost no hours on it. I really wanted a new 4-stroke.
I was wrong. I am one of few around here...
