Re: Can batteries be wired in series AND parallel?

It's been a long time since I worked on trucks, but the switch was a single solenoid switch that activated when the starter was activated. It supplied 24 volts to the starter. What I don't remember...

Re: Compression release lever

Re: Thoughts on SPOT and inReach?

So we should be getting our InReach any day now. I was looking at the SPOT plans and reading some of the reviews when one of the folks commenting on SPOT said he dumped his and went with InReach. ...

Re: A phone call you don't want to receive

We kept a previous boat on a mooring several years ago and it did break loose and drift up on shore during a high tide. We got the call from the Sheriff's Office notifying us at 4:00 a.m.

So a...

Re: Fraser Built Sailboats

I spoke to Aire DeKleer this past weekend. I was jotting notes as fast as I could to reconcile some of the different stories I've heard about how their boats got started. He's offered to meet me at...

Re: Phantom Current Drain

I had the exact same problem with one of our previous boats. My recollection is that there was an additional grounding wire in the system that bypassed the shunt for the battery monitor. Even...

Re: Car Radar Detector

I'm glad you asked this question, because it's something I've been thinking about as well. We knew a guy who cruised in the 80's and used a car RADAR detector during off shore passages and he said...

Re: Why don't boats have headlights?

I have hundreds of hours running patrol boats at night under all sorts of conditions. When conditions are good, artificial lighting is a nuisance. Change the conditions, they're another tool to...

Re: 2 displays for one radar?

I used to run charting software on a laptop (before I got dedicated chart plotters). I had the laptop sitting in holder near the companion way where I could see it from the cockpit. My RADAR...

Re: Leaking Compass Repair

I experienced that with a previous boat. Our compass had a diaphragm that sprung a leak. The manufacturer sold me a replacement diaphragm for under $10, but they wanted me to send the compass in so...

Re: Volvo MD7A transmission water leak. Bypass?

I'd probably try something like that myself (JB weld it) but only after confirming that the water leaks externally and not internally as well.

After making sure the oil level is okay on the dip stick, can you remove the access covers then start it and watch for the source with a good flashlight?

Re: About to buy, nagging engine issue - seeking advice

We had a brand new Volkswagon with a diesel in it in 1980. Even with a brand new motor, the motor wouldn't start unless you ran the glow plugs for the set time. So you can't necessarily determine...
