You could check out the new Garmin autohelm. They will power many old drive units according to the wiring instructions that came with mine. They just need a optional hook up cable

On my E37 it seemed the factory applied the vinyl head liner in one piece when the deck was upside down.
How I did it was use ¼ inch plywood and cut it into pieces to fit the origional sections...

It will sink. It will not shock or blow up, the acid will dilute rapidly, the lead however will leach into that part of Marine heaven for all eternity so make a effort to retreave it asap.
