Re: aluminum boat painting

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Hudsonian. Keep the suggestions coming, I like lots of options.

Re: aluminum boat painting

Oh, I agree 100% on the "bare aluminum" approach. Unfortunately this particular boat was not built with being left bare in mind, so I really doubt that she would look very good with no fairing...

Re: aluminum boat painting

Since its one we are thinking about buying, I don't want to give away too much. She's an older custom aluminum sailboat in the high 40's LOA. Currently painted (unfortunately) with AWLGRIP....

aluminum boat painting

Looked at a boat last weekend, we liked her a lot, but she badly needs a paint job. Any one have a suggestion for some places in the northeast or the great lakes that would be able to do a good job...

Re: Boat Trucking from Northeast Coast to Great Lakes

Alright, everyone has convinced me: If we do end up purchasing this boat, it looks like we will be doing the Erie Canal. Probably save something like $5k+...which will go a long ways towards the...

Re: Boat Trucking from Northeast Coast to Great Lakes

Denise-

There are, but this particular one checks off a lot of boxes for me that may make it worth the hassle of getting it to the Great Lakes.

Re: Boat Trucking from Northeast Coast to Great Lakes

Minne-

The more I learn and think about shipping, the more I think that it is unlikely that trucking will be a good solution for us. I've got a feeling that the boat is too tall to ship anyway....

Arch- I will keep you in mind.

I don't know if we'll end up with it or not, it appears to be the right price, and it has a lot of features we like, but it is about 8 feet longer than what I was...

Re: Boat Trucking from Northeast Coast to Great Lakes

That's kind of what I'm wondering. The one quote I received (and I was clear that it was an inquiry for a boat I was considering, not one that I yet owned) was for about $6k...there's a lot that...

Boat Trucking from Northeast Coast to Great Lakes

Hey all, considering the purchase of a boat on the east coast, and wanting to see if anyone has recommendations for transport from there to Lake Erie. Its a pretty large boat (48' LOA, 13.75' beam,...

Re: Weird weird july weather.....

I'm glad to hear that we aren't the only ones...for the most part the work to reward ratio (we just sail in circles on a small lake currently) has been pretty high lately...haven't sailed nearly as...

Re: BVI Restaurants

Sydney's on Jost Van Dyke (Little Harbor) is pretty good too. The Honor Bar there is cool.

Re: Virgin Islands Sailing School

Danny, sounds like your experience mirrors mine. We spent a good deal of time with Molly too even though we were on Bill's boat. My wife even sailed with her for a day. Glad it went well! :)

Re: Tacking and Boat Slows Down

Is your mast square to the boat? Tensions on the shrouds all equal (and correct)? Jib cars in the same place on both sides? Traveler centered?

Re: Lorance Elite-4M and Samrad TP-22

The HDI transducer works just fine for me shooting through the hull. I've got it attached to the bilge using toilet bowl wax actually. It won't shoot through a cored hull, but solid fiberglass seems...

Re: Virgin Islands Sailing School

We were on Prana (a Beneteau Oceanis 440) with Bill Miles. We sailed out of Red Hook, anchored in a couple of bays on St. John (Leinster Bay, Newfound Bay) cleared in to BVI at West End, anchored...

Re: Are sailing schools worth it?

Just got back from doing a sailing school with my wife. We already had the "sailing" part down pretty well, as we have a 26' boat on a small lake, but what we really wanted (and received in spades)...

Power For Sail:

After spending a week on Prana with Captain Bill Miles of Blue Water Sailing School I can wholeheartedly endorse the course, company, and captain. I also spent a good amount of...

Just came back to say that we just arrived back from our week of sailing school in the Virgin Islands, and we had an absolute BLAST. We massively lucked out and the one other person on our boat was...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

It would be my assumption that if you bought enough to do a 40' boat, you'd get at least a bit of a volume discount, but a 24" x 24" x 0.125" sheet of titanium at McMaster-Carr is $1592, while a...

The "house" "boat" that Bob asked him about, I think. It is in his photo section.

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

I don't disagree, but it IS 42% less dense than stainless steel and has 53% more tensile strength than aluminum. That's why we use it on our ultra high speed centrifuge rotors. Only really would make...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Well, you CAN spin it at 120,000 rpm and it not explode, and even when it does, the rotor is still pretty much intact, so, I'm going to go with "yes." :)

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Titanium wouldn't have the problems that aluminum has with copper based bottom paint. Aluminum is more reactive than copper, whereas there isn't much that is more noble than titanium. I'm thinking...
