Re: fuse popped, ARRRG

Car/truck engine bays are much cooler than most boat engine bays. At idle speeds they have a relatively huge fan running, and if you've ever looked at the road pan, fender construction, gap on the...

Re: Ever had a MEDICAL EMERGENCY while at SEA?

An ocular migraine aka classic migraine is simply not an emergency. A damned inconvenience, as the Brits might say, but there is no danger to life or property, so by definition it isn't an emergency....

Re: Dismasted in the Aegean - lessons to learn

'It should also be noted that if the boat is a Bavaria 2005 than the rig IS less than 10 years old."
But is that nine years, in charter service, equal to 90 years of casual summer weekend use on a...

Re: fuse popped, ARRRG

Denise, you don't even want to ask how much a circuit breaker with that high an amp rating would cost.

Re: $3000/mo cruising budget

Mark, you don't need money to be drunk 24/7. Surely, you can find a way to turn potatoes, rice, or grain into moonshine? No tovarich to tech you how to make wodka?! You've missed out on a basic...

Re: Installing tapered scuppers?

Tapered, no. Beveled, for a flush mount, yes. Someone must make drill bits that will make that bevel, but they won't be hole saws. Hole saws are circular, like half a tin can.

You could get a...

Re: Elevator method of COB recovery mixed results

"I'm flipping through my Annapolis and I don't see Rousmaniere mentioning that method..."

He's a great source for marine matters. But really, if you want to know about elevators, you should be...

Re: When Do You Reef?

Casey, I have no idea what your boat and rig are like.

Or what your purpose in reefing is.

If you want to optimize boat speed, you reef according to the VPPs for your boat. You may be...

Re: Elevator method of COB recovery mixed results

Minne, if you're going to do it that way, you might as well toss them a sling and hoist that up with a winch on the halyard.

The proper way to do an elevator recovery lies, as most of us know, in...

Re: Anyone ever sold at a profit?

A friend bought a Pearson26 around 1989, sold it about two years later and yes, made a modest profit on it. By cleaning it up nicely and not installing anything expensive while he owned it, and...

Re: fuse popped, ARRRG

And if you have no silicon grease to schmear on the fittings to prevent them from turning green, you can always use chicken schmaltz.

With any leftover chicken schmaltz, you can make chopped liver.

Re: Consequences of complete battery discharge

With an old-fashioned analog or dumb charger, you could just connect a voltmeter to the output leads and see if it was putting out ~14.4 volts. With the new chargers, even the cheap $30 ones sold in...

Re: Boat Explodes

When you get diesel properly vaporized and mixed, i.e. out of a pinhole spray at high pressure, you can get quite an explosive mixture. It is called a thermobaric or fuel-air bomb (aka ANFO, ammonium...

Re: Avoid "diegoscustommarine" on eBay for custom canvas

"Disabling things like Java and using software that prohibits ALL scripts are basics that most folks do not know about. "
And as TakeFive notes, that can be crippling. It doesn't have to be, but...

eBay's reps sometimes only sound like they speak English. (Which to me is the only tongue that matters for a US customer of a US business.) eBay's policies continually change, and eBay will...

Re: My new web site is up and running

Otto, it IS latin. It happens to be the standard jibberish that typsetters use when they want to slug in a body of type, to see how it will look or fit, and the actual verbage to go there hasn't been...

Re: Need help finding dock space near NY or Philly

Try Gateway Marina. Across (west) from Floyd Bennett Field, within sight of JFK. Access by the F train and then a short taxi or bus ride if you don't want to hike a mile or two.

Access can mean a...

There's no indication that he was sloppy. People do put out hits on current and former DEA agents, so that's on the table as well.

Re: Pimp my dinghy!

A head light is not a white 360-visible light. So it may be handy, but it won't be a legal nav light on a powered vessel.

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

I wouldn't say the non-refillables are lesser quality, they are built differently because they can be crimped shut, no threads needed to reopen them. As for making more trash...One way you toss it...
