Re: Single-handed tips and tricks

Our boat is probably rigged somewhat typically - and illogically - in that halyards are led aft but reefing lines must still be handled at the gooseneck (tack hooks and in-boom clutches)

In our...

Re: Journey or the Destination

While, to me, "the journey is the point; the destination a bonus", I certainly look forward to seeing new places too.

Dropping the hook in a good anchorage is a mighty nice way to cap off a good...

Re: Looking for a Catalina 320, 34 mark ii or 309

Unless you know the difference in port light arrangements, it's very difficult to distinguish between a 34 or a 36 without seeing the decal. If you feel comfortable with the idea of a Cat 34, looking...

Re: Looking for a Catalina 320, 34 mark ii or 309

Have been in a similar boat for a while too... hobbled, though, by the dwindling value of our current 'pre 90s' GOB...

I prefer the double spreader rig of the 320, coupled with a great cockpit. We...

Re: Single-handed tips and tricks

I don't set the lazy jacks until just before dousing the main.

On the main douse pulling back to stretch the flake aft works well but your slugs/track/etc has to be smooth and free running for...

Re: Transducer Compatability

Not directly, but I was able to interface a 25 yr old Signet DS transducer with a new Raymarine ST 40 Depth sounder display head successfully.

The newer version probably has temperature capability...

Re: Sailing at night with head sail?

To me it means better speed, gentler motion with more 'press' of sail and overall more comfortable.

Don't see any real issues with 'motorsailing' as long as your engine is happy to operate at...

Re: What would you do with the Trailer?

Lighter, of course, than non ULDBs but by that size the beam limitation is usually the bigger deal for routine towing - Ford, GM and Dodge etc will be pleased to sell you a tough enough vehicle!

I...

Re: Sailing at night with head sail?

Any boat is going to perform and behave better with a proper balanced sailplan for the conditions. Going to main-alone at night seems an overreaction..

Reducing sail as a precaution overnight is...

Re: Getting Started Cruising?

In case you're wondering... Southern Gulf Islands (BC, Canada)!

btw I'd add my vote for the PNW region for stellar, though seasonal (depending on how hardy you are) cruising. From Olympia in Puget...

Re: Deck Hatches-- Lewmar vs. Vetus

The Lewmars are great, but at a price premium. The Vetus look good (nice finish, support struts etc) too.

Bomar is another hatch manufacturer still in business, you might check them out too.

Re: sailing as exercise?

We hike/walk when we can for lower body, kayak near daily for upper when cruising. Given the terrain in our area some the hikes are a true workout with the bonus usually being a spectacular view.

Re: Leaky hatches.

How about building up a 'curb' of epoxy around the hatch hole while you're at it?.. then rainwater would be less likely to climb the curb and challenge whichever sealant you use.

Re: Turnbuckles Cal 30

There is a wide variety of turnbuckle styles and configuration.

"Matching" what you have now should be safe enough, but sometimes doing so is difficult if the original manufacturer is out of...
