Re: 10' Porta Boat For Dinghy?

I used an 8' porta bote as a dingy for my 26' Nonsuch. It worked fine. We were able to transport 2 people, 2 folding bikes, oars, life jackets, gas tank, garbage, 5 gallon water container and other...

Re: What shim material to use between the transom & motor mount?

FinallySailing - I briefly looked around on-line. Some cutting board labels specify polyethelene but most do not. Any additional detail may say antimicrobial.

Minnewaska - I'll do more looking...

Re: What shim material to use between the transom & motor mount?

How will the UHMWPE boards be labelled? I'm guessing that the packaging will just say something like durable, sanitary plastic.

Re: What shim material to use between the transom & motor mount?

I read somewhere that there are interior and exterior grades of UHMWPE. That interior grades degrade in sunlight. Have you heard anything of the sort? Any way for us simple folk to differentiate...

What shim material to use between the transom & motor mount?

Here's my project. My boat is a Compac 19. It presently has a Garelick motor mount. The problem is that I can't get the mount in the full up position since the handle of the mount hits the rubrail....

Re: Do I need to protect areas scratched on mast?

OK. You've convinced me to use a metal compression tube rather than nylon. I'll get more opinions about the mast integrity too.

Re: Do I need to protect areas scratched on mast?

No that's not a weld. Just some cellophane wrapped around the mast. As far as a compression tube, I was planning to use a nylon bushing. Drill one of the holes wide enough to accommodate the outside...

Do I need to protect areas scratched on mast?

Hello,
I have a new-to-me Compac 19. The previous owner had tightened down the spreader sockets on the mast too tight. His work left this dimple:...

Re: Should there be a washer on the outboard engine oil drain plug?

I'll be looking for one today. I'll be passing a marina with a pretty good parts department so I'll likely pick up a washer or two there.
Thanks

Re: Should there be a washer on the outboard engine oil drain plug?

Thanks Mark. That answers my question and a whole lot more!
It does require a washer. Washer is cheap enough but hate to spend 8.95 for S&H. Think I'll look around the hardware store for something...

Should there be a washer on the outboard engine oil drain plug?

I am changing the engine oil on my 4 stroke 6 hp Nissan outboard. This is the 1st 4 stoke I've owned. I was surprised that there was no washer on the drain plug. Should there be one there?
Thanks...

Re: Should I try to clean my own sails

Wikipedia says:
The active ingredient in OxiClean is sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3•H2O2), an adduct of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

Don't know whether this is the same...

Re: Should I try to clean my own sails

My sail maker said to use oxiclean. The 1st time I used it, I washed the mainsail while still on the mast. (Wash with soft brush, rinse and raise the sail another 4 feet.) Came out great and I was...

I don't know what you mean by this. Can you explain it or post a picture?
Thanks

Re: Help me decide - Mooring bitt or cleat?

Yea. I agree with you. There's too much riding on a cleat or bitt to skimp on installation. I'll be using the largest backing plate I can.

Re: Help me decide - Mooring bitt or cleat?

Casey, Thanks for the photo. Any advantage of having the rod go fore-aft rather than port-starboard?

Re: Help me decide - Mooring bitt or cleat?

Thanks for the comments.
I'm assuming most mooring lines will be 3/4 inch diameter - am I right about that?

Delite: You're right, an 8" cleat would seem somewhat out of scale for the boat. I...

Help me decide - Mooring bitt or cleat?

I just got a Compac 19 sailboat. It is going to be kept on a mooring for at least the next season. I currently have a 6 inch bow cleat. If I keep the cleat, I'm going to upgrade to an 8" cleat to...

Re: Marthas Vinyard

I've gone in there many times on a Nonsuch with a 5' draft. No problem as long as you stay in the channel.

Best place IMO is Lake Tashmoo. Great holding, dingy dock with potable water and a dumpster. Tree lined shore, well protected and a very pleasant 20 minute walk into Vineyard Haven. It is also a...

Looking for Pearson 23 info

I've been looking at a Pearson 23 on Craigslist. Anyone have experience with this boat? I can't seem to find much info on it. I'd like to use it on Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
Thanks...
