Re: hole plug
I concur. The "plug" that comes with most of these depth/speed instruments is meant to be temporary, and usually made of plastic and hollow, typically much less substantial than the speedo/depth...

Or equally beneficial, consider purchasing some of those do-it-yourself items from his site. The butyl tape has come in very useful over the years.
Thanks Maine Sail for all the "How-To" advice.

Re: Traveler???
Some boats are designed for a mid-boom traveler, others for an end boom traveler/sheet, and most somewhere in between. The forces on the deck or cabin top transmitted from the mainsheet are...

Re: Cape Dory 30 - How slow is "slow?"
How slow is slow to you? If you are not racing, it makes perfect sense to buy a heavy boat that will smooth out the chop on the bay on those rough days, and be a boat you are happy sitting in on the...

Re: which side slip?
As to the concerns you mentioned, I think it is a wash. You will have a neighbor that can hit you either way, and whether it is easier to "cut" sharply into a closer slip or slide to the farther...

Re: Main Halyards - Back to cockpit or keep at mast?
I agree with Dave. My lines are all run back to the cockpit for a number of reasons:
1. It is much easier in a pinch with sailing solo or short handed to raise and lower the main from the cockpit....

This question seems to come up frequently. The thoughtful responses are as varied as the available boats are, and are almost always correct (both sides).
I look at this in the same way you would...

I agree with getting out on the water. In my experience (and observation) it is rare for someone to wait for years for that "perfect" first boat and find that indeed it really is the perfect boat...

I agree. Don't fool around and get a good nights sleep. The cost of a good LED mast-head anchor light has come down considerably, and is worth the investment.

Re: Steaming light
The requirements for lights are the same as for a similar sized power boat if you are not sailing. If sailing at night, you won't need the steaming light, however.

Faulty premise. The logic suggests that because members are searching the gear and maintenance forums that translates to what they are doing when at their boat. I would submit that I don't need...

I agree. Open it up with multiple holes on each side and let time and sir dry it, unless there is rot, then you will have to take the core out and start over to have any reasonable result.

I understand what you are after. Don't think you really need to pole out the 155 all the way, and I would settle for a pole for your size boat that goes from about 16-18 feet. If you are planning...

I also recommend Butyl tape for this job, since the window will be held in place by the bolts, and the sealant has only to form a tight and resistant seal. Using any of the silocone caulking gets a...
