As I post this, I will give notice that I am brand spankin new to sailing.

When heaving to, should you end up at the "in irons" position or does it matter? Just as long as the tiller is locked...

That's about what I'm thinking. The only areas I worry about are getting the main up and possibly reefing the main. That is the only time I can remember it getting a little squirrelly during class.

My buddy does not know how to sail and we will be on a lake.

Sailing gloves are definitely a good idea. I can recall having that jib sheet run...
