Re: Need sailing with family advise!

I think Schnool nailed your problem. I have a lot more experience with canoes and kayaks than sailboats, but the issues associated with hull shape and healing are similar. Boats with hard chines and...

Re: Getting Back On the Water

Well, that's pretty much the bottom line, isn't it? If I didn't or couldn't have a tow vehicle capable of pulling a boat that makes my family safe and comfortable (for whatever reason), I would...

Re: Getting Back On the Water

I'm not that experienced of a sailor and I have never had a boat that wasn't stored on a trailer, but I think it's a good plan. Worth doing at least for the first year - assuming you have the time...

Re: Getting Back On the Water

All the sailing you can stand for $1000 a year? That's it? My 20' trailer sailer works for me where I am, but if I had the option of sailing such a large area for that price without trailering and...

Re: Thanks for the encouragement

I certainly hope it means he is too busy. Given that his last post was from Iraq, I pray that it doesn't mean the worst. Would be great if we could thank him and know his progress.

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Damn. I understood all those snowflakes. You're saying I'm uncivil? :eek And I only had one post in this thread.....which I believe I will now retract, because it was lame. :angel

You guys...

Re: Has anybody towed kayaks behind....

Borrowing from my river paddling experience....

Canoe trippers sometimes walk their boats upstream with a practice called "lining". One or two people walk along the river bank and guide the boat...

Re: No (Kent) Ranger 20 owners here?

The R20 is designed to have the mast raised from the bow, unlike most trailer sailers. You have to walk the horizontal mast forward, step it into the tabernacle from the forward side, then lift...

Re: No (Kent) Ranger 20 owners here?

John, sorry I didn't see this sooner! Been busy here - and sailing. I probably can help you with documentation and would be glad to get with you for some sailing or even just familiarization of the...

Re: No (Kent) Ranger 20 owners here?

Cute...haha! I'll allow that. ;) She is um, unconventional by today's standards (or maybe even any standard) - I'll admit. Very mild-mannered and user friendly though, and ours lives up to it's...

No (Kent) Ranger 20 owners here?

I know there's a Yahoo group, but it isn't real active. And the original owners group is defunct.

The little Kent Ranger is a great day sailer and we've been really enjoying it. I wonder if there...

Re: Get your nose out of your phone!

Well, gee. I don't. That's why I asked. Was that answer for both - or just the second question?

How do we know he's a passenger? How do we know he doesn't see this every weekend?

Re: Vocabulary help - Two Years Before the Mast

...Or much of the spelling of the time was optional or has been abandoned since.

Makes it hard to do a search from complete ignorance.

Thanks again!

Vocabulary help - Two Years Before the Mast

So, I've been reading the book in my spare time. Finding a lot of words and terms I've had to look up. This one is escaping me....

Re: Worst Sailboats Ever!

Okay. Another comment....

Pretty sure I saw this very same boat sailing (yes, with sails up) last week. Yeah, we were going faster (less slow?) But it didn't look like their day was sucking.

Re: Worst Sailboats Ever!

The only comment I feel like making on this thread is to paraphrase our local dog trainer...."There are no bad sailboats....just bad sailboat owners."

Also kind of the same as with dogs, my heart...

Re: Humbled

I started sailing on a Sunfish. Owned my own for a while - actually, two of them, but one was a basket case I used for parts.

It is fairly common on Sunfishes for the hull/deck seam to leak over...

Re: 50' Motor Cruiser, powered by 2 6hp outboards.

I guess I can still comment, because I have built a boat (a SOF kayak). ;)

First - if in a dark ally you meet the man who can punch his fist through 1/8" plywood with fiberglass skin, don't refuse...

Re: Don't have to be rich to sail

Very true. We are blessed.

OTOH...people have been sailing long before indoor plumbing, and are in fact, sailing even now in what most of us here would consider "poverty" (out of necessity, in...
