Re: Boat Shoes

I'm have radically mixed feelings about this, but these are my favorite boat shoes of all time:

Re: Problems when reefing Main Sail

Yeah, on mine the cheek block is actually aft of the cringle. I don't know if that diagram is actually to scale or not. It's just something I found online, searching for images from the Catalina...

Re: Problems when reefing Main Sail

A Catalina 27 will go to weather just fine on a reefed main (assuming it's reefed properly).

Here is me doing it:

Re: is VHF STILL the only way to contact bridges?

I was stuck at a bridge for a half hour once when the attendant wouldn't answer on the VHF. Eventually I had remembered that I had seen telephone numbers when I looked up the drawbridge schedules (it...

Re: Splash 2015

My boat is technically in the water but I still haven't really sailed yet, which is perhaps even more damaging to my psyche than if it were just on the hard.

It's always something: Enlightenment |...

Re: Bet your Marina doesn't do this on Opening day!

At a yacht club with a gaff-rigged flag pole, you fly it like you do on a boat, where the burgee is higher and the ensign is on the gaff. The gaff is the the most honored position in that type of...

Re: Tuckerton NJ Channel

Please let us know how it goes. I'm also curious about that area.

I've been to Tuckerton via the western side of Little Egg Harbor, and I've been to Beach Haven (and as far as AC) via the ICW, but...

Re: Splash 2015

This is my first spring with a boat big enough to require a lift, and it's making me crazy. On my old 22, we would have been sailing by now.

We technically splashed by some measure, but we're...

Re: Land sickness ?

We used to get landsick from as little as a weekend aboard. That doesn't happen anymore, but on longer trips, we still get it.

I wrote a little bit about it once here: Landsick | Sailing...

And I totally agree that Sailing Anarchy's mobile site is rad.

Re: Tanker goes out of control on Delaware River

They kind of do appear out of nowhere when you're in a 3000 ft long dogleg in the channel and can't see around the the corner. It's nothing that you can't avoid, but it can be unnerving and would be...

Re: Tanker goes out of control on Delaware River

Crazy. Not to fuel the armchair quarterbacking, but that spot is on Chart 12314, just west of Burlington Island, if you're curious. It almost hit the range mark, so it was initially going the right...

Re: Catalina 22 rudder

There were a couple times when I could have sworn that the spring tab wasn't touching, but as soon as I pressed it, the rudder came right off. I'm not sure what else it would be. My pintles didn't...

Re: Boom hardware. A boom slide?

Are you using "clew" correctly? I only ask because the vang and outhaul would definitely be on opposite ends. The clew end would be the aft end. The tack end would be forward, up by the gooseneck.

Re: Rebuilding a mast. Boom diameter.

Not sure about the strength loss of going down 1/4", but if you'd like to keep it closer to original, you could try RigRite. They have tons of parts: Spars Main Page...

Re: Thoughts on Petit Vivid (non-copper) bottom paint?

I think there's Vivid (with copper) and Vivid Free (without copper.) I used Vivid Free on my previous boat and liked it well enough, but I think it's been discontinued:

Vivid Free...

Re: Rusting lifeline - what to do?

The lifelines were rusty on my previous boat, and I replaced them with coated wire again. I completely understand the advantages of both uncoated stainless and Dyneema, but it just didn't make any...

Re: New Jersey sailing

I live pretty close to there and both race on the Delaware River (as crew, on someone else's boat) and have my own boat at the shore. There are lots of decent options around.

The Delaware is...

Re: Best place to mount a Turkey Fryer on a boat

Today, I smoked a 46' turkey on my lowly 28' boat thanks to good cooking.

Why can’t these picnic chefs learn to cook?

They especially seem to have a problem with a deep frying. The oil should...

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

I think he has yet to demonstrate that he can make the boat go in a direction of his choosing, reefs or not.
