Re: Single handed docking...

Never jump off the boat! If you have to jump, you are doing it wrong.

I got a lot of practice docking my boats single handed; I was on a mooring at my club and needed to bring the boat into a...

Re: Masts - deck or keel stepped?

Deck stepped masts also tend make for a drier boat, as you don't have this huge hole in the middle of the deck that you have to keep sealed.

We've had a deck stepped boat for the last 7 years, so...

At age 47 my wife and I are in that minority. As a rule we are generally either the youngest couple in a social group, or the oldest...

Re: Selling the house or renting

Renting is a pain in the butt. If you can make money by hiring a property manager (which costs about 1 mont's rent/year) that is the only way to do it. Unless you want to deal with the tenant BS,...

Re: A phone call you don't want to receive

Recently we we were in Panama...someone else gave some friends of ours a fright.

There was another American boat with the same name as ours (Evenstar) in Panama headed to Ecuador. Our next stop...

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

Probably this^^

Or possibly find a local place in Tahiti that can service it. Or send it back to the U.S. to rebuild.

I need to grab my multimeter and do some testing. Worse case scenario I...

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

We considered it.

It was 300 miles back to the Galapagos. The Galapagos have zero facilities there, and getting parts shipped there is by all reports a hellishly time consuming and frustrating...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

We spent some time with Field Trip in the Caribbean. I don't know the Rebel Heart folks but did spend some time talking with Mark about our mutual plans. They seemed prepared and yes the kids are...

Re: Inflatable Kayaks

We have a Puffin Saranac two person kayak. We are quite pleased with it.

I knew going into it I'd be too fat and awkward to climb in from the boat, but my wife and kids (teenagers...full sized...

Re: What do cruisers do?

Today I got up early and went into town to buy some baguettes before they were all gone. The last boulangerie on Nuka Hiva closed a while ago, and now baguettes are available in the morning at one...

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

We just arrived in the Marquesas Saturday. Our autopilot died the second night, we hand steered the last 2,700 miles of the trip. We are lucky, we have two teenagers that can take the helm.

I...

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

Not a great plan, at least not for me. If you are wearing earplugs and the watch stander needs help they are going to have to start blowing horns or leave station and come kick you awake.

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

I know at least one of them. They are leaving the Galapagos soon last I heard. We expect to catch up to them in the Marquesas.

The do float...we have both of those models too.

A word to the new 78 series though, we got one of those for my son. It has a REALLY powerful cool new feature - Custom Maps.

Basically you can...

Re: At what point is a boat overweight?

The other reason being that once you load everything you still own onto the boat after selling 98% of your possessions, AND you pack in all the spares, tools, food, and so on the waterline...drops.

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

Well the Adult Supervision should make you happy then, you've been complaining about the lack of it. In all my dealings with the Knowles I've never gotten the sense that they'd take absolutely...

Re: mmsi numbers, ship radio and hand held VHF

We have a similar setup, I just bought the HX851 too.

After asking the same question I opted to use the same MMSI number. Others had tested it and told me they had tried calling the mother ship...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

You imply it repeatedly every time you post about the lack of experience in SDR skippers. It is implicit in your judgement that they need more "Adult Supervision".

I am not super experienced.

What makes you think my vessel was not safely equipped? You seem to ASSume that doing the SDR makes you a fly by night hack. This is not the case.

By your own description you do NOT qualify...

Re: Live aboard legal address

The concept of a "Town" or a "State" are every bit as much of a legal fiction as a "Resident".

The State of Florida DMV, the Clay County Board of Elections, the Clay County Public Library, the...

Re: Live aboard legal address

You are wrong, dead wrong. Sorry...

DMV has their own criteria, they say I am a resident.
BoE has their own criteria, they say I am a resident.

It is on my drivers licenses and on my IRS...

Re: Live aboard legal address

Try to send a FedEx package to a PO box, try to send one to an SBI PMB.

You will quickly learn the legal distinction.

As far as house arrest goes, I am guessing the judge wouldn't allow it for...
