Re: Winch Bases Needed

Thanks for the encouragement, Captainmeme. As you suggest, I intend to through-bolt the whole kit and caboodle through the side deck and put a backing plate underneath it all. The ipe mounting ring...

Re: Winch Bases Needed

Gentlemen,

What do you think of the idea of constructing the rings from ipe, Brazilian walnut wood? It would be a cinch to laminate two pieces of 1" ipe with the grains at 90 degrees to each...

Re: Winch Bases Needed

My winches, which are used, cost $350 on eBay, plus $100 for shipping. So far, I am out only $450.

Re: Winch Bases Needed

Uncivilized, here is the quotation from Hutton Winches in Australia:

"I have just 2 stainless steel 28 Barient base in stock for $550.00 each, freight to Hawaii would be $120.00, total...

Sloop JonB, it looks like you have found the right place for the job. I have sent them a message requesting a quotation. Thanks to you.

Re: Winch Bases Needed

Belated thanks for the information. After snooping around Honolulu for a local solution, I have contacted Port Townsend and Toplicht for estimates. Aloha!

Re: Winch Bases Needed

Sloop JonB , the guts of the ST28 is bronze with some stainless, as you say. The drum is stainless. It looks like the base, or mounting ring, is the aluminum part.

Re: Winch Bases Needed

TQA, Thanks for taking those photos of your winch bases. If they are that badly corroded, they must be made of cast aluminum, which in a salt-water environment, has eroded over time.

No bases at...

"Are you talking about a type of bracket or pad to bolt them to the deck or a metal housing piece of the winch itself?"

Thank you, Knuterikt, TQA and SloopJonB. JonB's question helps to clarify. I...

Winch Bases Needed

I have just bought on eBay a couple of used Big Bertha Barient 28 flat-top winches as secondaries for my old 36' ocean racer. I didn't realize that the bases for these winches were not included in...

Re: Paint for Cabin

The salon is very dark now, indeed -- darker than before because of the CPES on the ceiling and the spar varnish that you see here on the bulkheads. The bulkheads used to be bare wood that had never...

SVTatia,

Hmmm! There's an idea. Where would I procure a color remote camera?

Re: Paint for Cabin

I THOUGHT that divulging the fact that I own Solveig might get a rise out of an Aussie like you! What fun! Yes, I have had fiberglass boats before, and I would not have bought a wooden boat this time...

Re: Paint for Cabin

Yes, I should post some pictures, but it is a rain night here and I am away from the boat.

Solveig is an old Australian racer built by the Halvorsen yard in Sydney, so I naturally assumed that...

Re: Paint for Cabin

Drat, Classic30 ! Isn't there another way to skin this cat? Perhaps a skinny 4" roller cover soaked in CPES on the end of a sprung roller a foot and a half long slipped gingerly over the convex...

Re: Paint for Cabin

All of this good advice is helping me to make a choice of paints.

Now, I have a REAL doozy of a problem for you all. Down deep in the wine-glass shaped bilge of my boat are buried two copper or...

Re: Paint for Cabin

SVTatia,

Thanks for the comment. I have seen the Rust-Oleum marine paint at Lowes. Tell me: How long has it been since you used it down below?

Re: Paint for Cabin

Classic30,

Thanks for the additional help. I hope that I don't have to give the ceiling (inside of topsides) the four coats that you recommend. The 4" planks are separated by 1.5" frames on...

Re: Paint for Cabin

Thanks, Classic30. You are probably right about an undercoat, for the reason of flexing timbers, that you give, and because the wood is now so dark that the white finish that I hope for will probably...

Thanks, guys for the good advice. I have called Smith's in California, the firm that makes the clear penetrating epoxy sealer. They say that the CPES itself is a primer, so there is no need to...

Paint for Cabin

What sort of paint should I use inside the hull, down below in the main cabin on an old wooden boat that has been prepped with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer?

Dear overtorqued and flatracker,
In the interim, since my first e-mail inquiry, I have paid $200 for a small alternator manufactured by Nippon Denso. Like my new Jabsco water pump, it is not...
