In your size boat, I would definitely recommend taking the Intracoastal. You can enter at Manasquan, NJ.

Dismal Swamp or Virginia Cut

I have done both several times.
The Dismal Swamp route is more interesting if you have the time and do not draw more than 6 feet.

Having sailed extensively outside the US
I always use an anchor light in the fore traingle, which is required by international regulations.

How do US sailors get by with just a masthead light?
