Re: Size vs. Condition/Amenities?

For comfort and living aboard, nothing beats size. Amenities can be added and elbow grease is free.

You can't add head room, or extra hull thickness or even more motion comfort.

Re: Sudden inability to sail upwind

Back up to the ball instead of nosing in. You'll be able to see it, and with the low free board of a C22 you can reach over in a leisurely manner pick up the pennant then stand and walk to the bow...

Re: Battery consumption. It's a mystery.

No, this tells you voltage and current draw when you look, the BMV 600 series tells you over time what you've put in and taken out (not a snap shot in time). So, in a nutshell one is a display, the...

Re: First Race

20kt winds gusting to over 30? Really? Water looks like under 15kts (no white).

Re: Ethernet cable to Garmin radar yanked apart

Better safe than sorry on day 2 of a foggy passage, yes- either new ends or since they are buying (or should be) a new cable.

Re: New to sailing in Maryland.

Since you are learning to sail I reckon it likely you'll be watching the weather and it won't be likely you'll need to motor against a 25kt wind.

Keep your eye on craigs list, deals are out there...

Re: Embedded Chain plate maint/replacement

The new plates will be in the exact same positions and angles as the old plates. Through bolted and not glassed in.
I've worked out various redesigns on the interior to make it so they can be...

Re: Recommended Instruments

Tough price curve Randy. Especially if you need the sensors as well.
Look at the Raymarine e7d series with a i70.

The e7d plotter can show the wind, depth, speed all by itself on half the...

Re: Embedded Chain plate maint/replacement

Just to let folks know what the reason for all the madness is.

Re: Thinking of Losing My Inboard

The only good part of having an outboard powered sailboat is you can take the motor off if it needs service.
Of course you'll have to take the motor off when it needs service.

Cruising with an...

Re: Embedded Chain plate maint/replacement

David,

The nut at the bottom of the forward (actually the center) plate is used to fasten a ground wire, it goes from there to the keel.

The plates stop at the heavy glass strip, they do not...

Embedded Chain plate maint/replacement

I promised in this thread to start a new thread on the steps going forward.

This is my attempt at doing so.

Re: Inexpensive slip in Western Chesapeake?

First you have to have realistic expectations.
On the Magothy River Ferry Point and Fair winds and Cypress creek marina's all have what are reasonable costs, but will run you from 1.8k to 2.2k a...

Re: Outboard no water through tell tale

Maybe a thermostat is closed?

You need to check your manual / parts list and read here:

Re: first bareboating for a weekend sail from Annapolis to Baltimore

Annapolis to Baltimore? That's more of a light day say not a weekend. I'm right in the middle on the Magothy river.
Type of boat, size etc. matters more than company - and for that you have to...

Re: Cheap boat parts?

You don't want or need cheap, you want or need inexpensive.

Used may not be as inexpensive as you think - you don't know the history and can't do non-destructive testing (x-ray's and acid tests)...

Re: My First Cruiser: Pearson Triton

I'm hung up on the 'and find out the hull number' part -

if you own it you have the title, if you have the title it has the hull number on it.

Re: 2 last minute questions

For docking - teach them safety - no part of the body goes between the boat and the dock, then teach them how to cleat a line and do it outside (under) the life lines. Put whichever one seems to...

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

Butyl tape - safe, easy to reopen the tank and reclean and put it right back on again.
Being as it leaks when 1/3 full it's probably a valve/fitting.

I'll remind you of my old trick for finding...

Re: Sail Trim: Minimizing rolling in sloppy seas

I run a preventer on the main going forward, then another going aft - prevents the main from moving at all.
Then a vang to hold it down.
It's better than nothing.

Re: Bent Stanchions- repair or replace?

Try Prism or Spotless Stainless - both do an excellent job of making stainless look like new.
The other thing you can do is either mix and match the new ones around the boat randomly, or just put...

Re: Joker valve?

Denise, I just changed out both of mine - simple, ten minute job.
The new and improved is a cross hatch on the valve - truly is better.

Flush your tanks first or at least pump a gallon of clean...
