Tauras, sympathies for your situation, but congrats on the attitude! We''re both able liveaboards so have no personal experience to offer. In our area there''s an organization "Chesapeake Region...

We built a frame over the boat out of PVC pipe from hardware store, covered with a loose tent of clear plastic 6-mil dropcloth, bottom weighted down with antifreeze jugs partly full of water. This...

Liveaboard Washington DC

Gangplank would be fun, but unfortunately they have a waiting list right now for liveaboards (not enough infrastructure). And there''s an additional income tax if you live in the District. Metro is...

Liveaboard Washington DC

Putting up with the 1-hour drive from Annapolis MD might be worth it for good sailing and a nice yearround liveaboard community. Try www.portannapolis.com

HELP!!! Boat Down!!!

Hmmm...may just be a coincidence, icebreaker came thru Annapolis on Weds.

About To Do It Questions

Thanx for the followup, Jack, and glad you''re having fun! We DO know what you mean about taking hours to get ready to sail. I wonder if this is a special burden for those who work from ''home''...

Only one food group?

Nope, not enough. There are 8 amino acids (building blocks of protein) that the human body cannot synthesize, therefore you need to get all 8 from your food. Grains in general have only 6 of the 8....

Jeff_H & others on the Coast & Chesapeake

Back Creek in Annapolis came thru almost unscathed, after the 8 feet of tidal surge dropped. We stayed aboard tied up in an oversize slip and didn''t get a scratch! John, don''t know how big your...

Happy Birthday!

okaaaay, that makes you 3 years, 364 days older than me.

If they''d brought out the party hats earlier, we''d all have had an even more interesting night. Failing that, we''ll have to make our...

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! This is too weird...maybe a huge sailing coincidence? Were you celebrating at the Mexican restaurant in Annapolis? We were the big table with the 4 liveaboards who also had...

Reflections After One Year Living Aboard

Thanx for posting this, it was a fun read. I''m at about the same stage, still missing the zillions of books and the huge closet from my land life (tho I''m a Washington bureaucrat instead of...

About To Do It Questions

I liveaboard year-round in Washington DC area. I would have said, not as cold as NY, until last winter. EEK!

A couple of thoughts for you: condensation is the #1 enemy. Line lockers with...

Living aboard and learning to sail, or vice versa

Sorry, if that last wasn''t clear, what I''m trying to get at is...don''t worry about doing it "perfectly" before you start. If you pick the wrong boat (like, you buy a wide slow comfy cruising boat...

Living aboard and learning to sail, or vice versa

Hi Mark -- Go for it! Being a writer seems an ideal career for a cruising liveaboard since you can do it from anywhere (spoken with envy by a liveboard with a dressy office job in Washingon DC...

Vegetarian live aboard

Hi Mark, I agreed with everything Jeff said. We''re also long-term vegetarians who decided not to put up with the additional cost/hassle of mechanical refrig. We found almost exactly the same...

What''''s needed on 1st boat?

Good point on the critters, Sadie14. We''ve never had that particular problem, I suppose it depends on where you sail, what kind of food you store, what kind of critters you are challenged with, and...

What''''s needed on 1st boat?

Heavy-duty Ziploc bags! Leave the tupperwares and other storage cannisters ashore. We use them for repackaging all sorts of things that originally were purchased in cardboard boxes. Double-bagged,...
