Re: Basic marine deep cycle battery questions

Matthew,

Take the amp draw of the light and VHF, which should be written on the packaging somewhere, or stamped on the fitting. It will certainly be on the VHF on the data plate. Add those numbers...

Re: Modern Hull forms and Motion Comfort

Outbound,

From the best data I can find, carbon/epoxy actually has a flatlining S-N curve, like steel, not a liner one like aluminium. So as long as the design is done properly fatigue life can be...

Re: cut-proof cable for securing dinghy and motor?

Nothing you can do about a determined thief. I actually helped prosecute a group that would show up and steal power boats on trailers... With ascetaline torches to cut younger locks away. The best...

Re: What's funner than a 17' Day Sailer

Tanzer 22, with a centerboard comes to mind.

Don't worry about to much leingth, unless you have storage restrictions there is no down side to a longer boat, and a lot of advantages.

Re: What's funner than a 17' Day Sailer

Jack,

As with all of these threads I think you need to provide a bit more information

1) price range
2) sailing experience
3) racing?
4) trailering?
5) where will it be stored
6) number of...

Re: behind mast furler

The problem in my experience is that as soon as the sail stretches at all there isn't enough room between the foil Nd the mast to wrap the entire sail up. Which leads to lots of jams, and stuck bits....

Re: Boat loan vs. refi or home equity

It really depends on how the loans are structured. If they are all full recourse loans it is a very different issue than if they are non-recourse loans.

But generally a home equity or refi loans...

Re: Biggest boat docked under sail

My largest was an Irwin 54' that had blown the turbo lube all over the engine compartment. Luckily it was a light air day.

Instead of trying to sail into the slip, we sailed past the slip, and...

Re: Now THIS is an interesting sailboat. (TED video)

There are actually a few boats with flying keels that are on the drawing board, and at least three different teams with them on the water already. Speed Dream is actually the least radical of the...

Re: How to glass

Agreed. Unless this part needs abrasion resistance I would cover it with three coats of neat epoxy to seal it, then paint it for UV protection.

Re: New England Ropes Synthetic lifelines?!?!

You can use it if you want. Johnson makes a very nice threaded eye that fits their standard gate hardware, they just want an arm and a leg for it. I probably wouldn't keep the turnbuckles, but the...

Re: Now THIS is an interesting sailboat. (TED video)

TQA,

The goal is to build the fastest ocean going mono. So it's real competitors are the Open boats, not hydropter or the Moth. Think more the Mari-Cha IV.

Re: O'Day DS or Flying Scot?

1) Having flipped a scot a number of times I question your statement that they don't flip. It's such a common problem on the Gulf coast, where they are used for club trainers, that we even have a...

Re: O'Day DS or Flying Scot?

I can't think of a boat I have sailed that was less funny than a flying scot. But I am not familure with the Oday.

If you have a budget in mind you might get better suggestions by indicating what...

Re: How to glass

Coating with epoxy may be a good idea, but I am not sure why you would need to coat an internal part with fiberglass, so long as the boat was designed without it.

If you do want to coat it, the...

Re: Winches, new equivalents to old

Kill,

You may be correct. I have found data going both ways.

On the Harken 66.2 the ratios are 25:1 and 66:1.

Re: Winches, new equivalents to old

The problem is that winch numbers are model numbers. They have at best a loose correlation with power.

The number you need is the power rating for both winches which is somewhere in the technical...

Re: Are abandoned boats a big problem in the U.S?

The problem is that when you add up all the money making parts (keel scrap, rigging scrap, ect...) and subtract the parts that cost you money (delivery, disposal, shipping thousands of tuns of...

Re: Aluminum screws instead of stainless

Monel sits just below titanium on the galvanic chart (so it is slightly less anodic depending in general) but close enough that you have to look at exacally what alloy. For aluminium applications...

Re: New England Ropes Synthetic lifelines?!?!

For what it's worth Brion Toss is on record saying he nor his shop will install wire lifelines anymore. They will only use dyneema. The reasoning he gives is that he considers wire dangerous, more...

Re: Are abandoned boats a big problem in the U.S?

TQA,

Part of the problem is that it is often cheaper to pay the slippage fee than to pay the disposal costs.

As an example, I have some sailing buddies that owned a 65' racer that lost its...

Re: Aluminum screws instead of stainless

Overboard,

Titanium is higher on the galvanic chart, but it has the advantage that when exposed to air or water titanium instantly creates a titanium oxide coating that is an insulater. So that a...

Re: New England Ropes Synthetic lifelines?!?!

Agreed the weight is marginal, but it adds up

I can make an entire set of lifelines for less than the cost of the fittings on one wire lifeline. Even assuming that the synthetic has to be replaced...

Re: behind mast furler

I know a number of people that have tried them. Every single one of them had major problems, and eventually took them off and threw them away.
