Re: What kind of work do you do to finance your sailing?

I'm "pseudo government", but still private sector. I manage the business side of a banking software application.

Re: Standing Rigging is really slack

If the turnbuckles were properly prevented from turning, I'd be very wary of this problem and would want to find out an answer before I sailed the boat again. If the chainplates didn't move, then...

Re: Incredible hull cleaner, dirt cheap and fast.

Surface prep, over application, and possibly temp at application or not letting the layers dry fully. The Poli Glow cleaner does a decent job of removing oxidation IF you scrub well with the white...

Re: Incredible hull cleaner, dirt cheap and fast.

I've used Poli Glow for 8 years now and have recommended it to several friends, all with out hesitation and regret. I have done the MaineSail routine on a pervious boat...and it looked great...

Re: Best Boat Hook?

I'm with Dave E on the West Marine boat hooks. Mine have held up pretty well and are decently priced.

Re: Boat BBQ tips and recommendations...

I have the Magma Kettle 2. It's small and fits on the rail just fine and cooks somewhat evenly. It dosent blow out even in a stiff wind, but the windier it is, the more prone to flareups and uneven...

Re: Bleach for cleaning cabin?

What rockDAWG said. Spray, let sit, then wipe down, scrub, or rinse. To minimize anything going overboard, wipe down. I'd also give Tilex Mold and Mildew a try. For maintenance, use a 50/50...

Re: Where do you stow your dink outboard?

I store my 3.5hp Mercury 4 stroke on the stern rail. I use one of the outboard motor mount pads made of plastic.

Re: Best 3-5 longshaft outboard

I agree with MarkSF on the Yamaha 6hp 2 strokes. I had one that was a 1992 model...started first pull and ran flawlessly...all the way until I sold the boat in 2008. I also had a Tohatsu 3.5 2...

Re: New, Buying first sail boat!!!!

Catalina 22, hands down. I sailed Lake Norman for the 5 years I lived in Charlotte, NC. I had a Beneteau 235 and 22-24ft is a perfect size for the lake. You need something that can move in light...

Re: New transducers smaller than holes

The Beneteau 235 does not have a cored hull, it's solid fiberglass. I think your method is spot on.

Re: Old gelcoat chalking

I'd use poliglow as its much easier than the wet sand, compound, polish, and wax routine. I use it on my boat and thus far in 5 years of use on two boats I've yet to experience any yellowing or...

Re: What do you pay for Slip Fees??

My slip on the Rappahannock (about 5 miles from the Chesapeake Bay) is about $2650 per year which includes water, electricity, and free pump out.

Re: need help

I'll echo what nighthawk said...definitely take your time and look around that shed for related "boat bits". A few years (or months...or for me...days) after storage...the memory fades where...

Re: POR 15 for Anchor Chain

I used POR 15 to treat a cast iron keel on a previous boat. It held up fine for two years in salt water, although it was under several layers of Interprotect and a coat of antifouling paint. I...

Re: Jabsco Head leak

Replace the whole thing at once. I tried to rebuild a Jabsco's easier to just replace the entire unit.

Re: First time crewing/racing this weekend

The first two races sound like a typical race with an unpracticed crew! Sounds like it was fun! The last race with someone overboard and hurt was not all. Bumps, scrapes,...

Re: Resealing veneer seam?

Looking at the pictures it's tough to tell...but are you sure it's veneer? I might think about removing the wood and replacing with new, especially if you want to remove the old instruments. If it...

Re: First time crewing/racing this weekend

As someone who has raced before with a variety of skippers, here is my two cents:

1) Arrive early and prepared. Ask now for the things you'll need to bring/have with you.

2) Hopefully the...

Re: I think I screwed up...

Diesel fuel doesn't separate like modern formulations of gasoline, the fuel will be fine until next year. You CAN run the engine on the hard, but you have to supply cooling water. I've never...

Re: How often do you visit your boat during winter layup?

Here in VA, I usually visit monthly. In past years I've stayed in the water, but this year I have hauled. I'll still visit monthly as there are several projects I'll be doing.

I too have ordered from them several times in the past and have nothing but positive things to say. Excellent prices and quick shipping. I'm sorry to hear about your experience.

Re: Optimal halyard length?

The big question here is what kind of sheave do you have at the top of the mast. If it's wide enough to handle something wider than wire then you have lots of options. It it's sized to fit just...

Re: Who uses a Larkshead on their jib sheets?

We have always used a larks head and haven't had any hang up issues. Yes, it's tough to undo at the end of a season, but a fid or marlin spike will help to gently ease the knot apart.

My wife and I went Friday and Saturday. We typically look at the 30-40 foot boats as those are the ones we may be able to buy one day.

The use of veneer in the Beneteau line dosent look like it...
