Oday 272 Head Installation

As far as I know, my holding tank is original and my 272 is also a 1986. My head is a standard Jabsco.

A philosophical divide?

It's funny, I'd much rather work on my boat than the house! But, I bought the boat to sail , and because I bought a very simple boat, the maintenance is not a burden.

Talk to me about whisker poles!

You can do without a whisker pole. I use a setup I read about in Sail which uses the boom as a whisker pole. All you need is a snatch block clipped to the end of your boom. Run the job sheet through...

Re: A simple gear question for a new sailor

I have never felt the need for gloves, except when handling the anchor. We keep a pair of gardening gloves in the anchor well for that purpose.

Re: Where can I park her?

I second the advice about getting a cruising guide. They are filled with local knowledge.

Re: Cellphone Nav?

I have used Navimatic's Charts & Tides for the iPad for 2 years now. As far as I can tell, it does everything I would need a $1500 chart plotter to do, but for $15 it is a bargain.
Is it reliable?...

Re: A family day... what do sailors do?

Well, my kids are older, so in the summer , the boat is a mobile swim platform. That, allowing them to bring friends, and plenty of food adds up to a great day. When it's too cold to swim, we usually...

Prop for my 9.9 Merc used for a sailboat

Wondering if a more efficient prop could be used for my outboard on my O'Day 272? I have the factory one now. The Mercury website was no help at all. Any guidance appreciated!

Re: Traveler positions - pros and cons

Completely agree, mine is on the roof and I use it all the time. In fact, I don't know how people sail without using the traveler - makes a huge difference in the performance of your boat.

November's issue of Cruising World

Was very disappointing. Nothing but articles of people going to <insert name of random third-world nation> where the people are so wonderful ( they like your money, not you) written by people who...

Re: Labor Day Weekend

We sailed up to Still Pond on Saturday. A friend of mine brought his power boat, so that kept the kids amused. A nice day of sailing , relaxing, good food, and swimming.

Re: Moving Up (Apprehensively)

My very FIRST boat was, and is, a 27 footer. I had to bring it into the marina and dock, is a little scary, but the only way to learn is to do it. Go slow and put out plenty of fenders, and...

Re: Winter under a tarp

I use two tarps. One over the boom with gallon jugs hanging from the tarp grommets to keep it on. The other goes from the mast to the bow over a simple frame I made of PVC pipe. Again, held on by...

Re: Power boater looking to learn to sail

Thera is nothing like actually sailing. Book knowledge is necessary, but you need to put it into practice. Nothing made sense to me until we got into the boat! I agree that a quick 3 day course will...

Re: When does the fun start?

Not me, I sail a lot more than I do maintenance . One look at my teak would convince you of that.

But that does not mean NO maintenance -you still have to do things to maintain the boat, much like...

Re: Poll about gybe preventer - when do you use one?

I rig a preventer when going downwind. This spring I didn't during a sail, and almost clocked myself with an accidental jibe. I will do it from now on...
