Re: Dogs and foreign ports

It's often a pain but it varies dramatically by country. Lots of countries in the Caribbean now want you to apply in advance for an import permit for the dog instead of just showing up with generic...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

I just spent 2 months eating what I could buy (and carry back to the boat) in the BVIs. You'll be fine. Bobby's in Cane Garden Bay is a good mid-trip stock up. You can also get good groceries in...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

There's a better market in Gun Creek (Buck's) and a free hourly ferry from Bitter End if you have the time. Takes a little more time but we got some nice bacon wrapped tenderloins & bone-in pork...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

That was still true a few weeks ago and the staff at Neptune's didn't say anything about putting in any when we asked.

And if you haven't been in a while, the channel at Anegada has been moved....

Re: Anyone Cruising The BVI's...

Well, that is almost 80' of waterline ;)

Glad you're getting some good wind, the forecasts weren't calling for much.

Re: Anyone Cruising The BVI's...

We're here hanging out in the Virgin Gorda North Sound today, possibly heading to Anegada tomorrow. Outbound (s/v Hippocampus) should be around somewhere too though he may be out of internet range....

Re: Bad news for Bay Moorings boaters!

I know that Walter (Flandria), Wendy & Paul (Sapphire Breeze), and Eric & Jessie (Aeolian) from the 200/300 dock have been keeping tabs on us :) It'll probably get a little duller now that we've made...

Re: Spinlock Tether Recommendation

Make sure to try out the hooks yourself. I find the Spinlock ones terribly difficult to work with one hand but other people love them.

Re: Iridium GO!

I've got the Kaito, which is really nice to grab weatherfax paired with an iPad (though it takes forever). In less than half the time to get one weatherfax I can grab half a dozen text forecasts, the...

Re: Kids or cruising first?

We went with bljones's advice. Bought a 34' sailboat, sold nearly everything (including the Hobie Tiger :( ), moved aboard a few months ago and need to start heading south in a week or so. The...

Re: Charting a Course

It depends on the chart (specifically, the projection). I have a North Atlantic passage planning chart that has a conical projection (IMRAY 100). On that chart straight lines are great circle routes....

Re: Bad news for Bay Moorings boaters!

I'm sorry but you'll find a marina dominated by sailors, so much so that the company that owns the place laments that it doesn't make as much $ as their powerboat-filled marinas :) They did let the...

Re: Modern day blue water sailboat?

The previous model (HR31 built from 1992-2009 (http://www.hallberg-rassy.com/hr31/hr31.shtml)) had a closed transom and a more overhang at the bow.

Re: BlackCat Systems HF Weather Fax for iPad/iPhone

The schedule button just displays the NOAA schedule from http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/rfax.pdf
There's a little button to update it in the app if NOAA ever updates it but you don't need...

BlackCat Systems HF Weather Fax for iPad/iPhone

Gotta plug a great app I've been playing with. BlackCat Systems recently released an app that can be used with a HF radio to receive weather faxes...

Re: Boat features list

TQA's suggestion to list ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE CONTRA INDICATIONS is ideal but don't be scared to look at boats that aren't what you thought you wanted. I "needed" at least 100 gals of water, no...

Re: What's wrong with this pic?

In The Thomas Crown Affair (remake) sailing screen, Pierce Brosnan is yelling at the rest of the crew to be snappy while he grinds this winch

Re: What is the smallest dinghy with a cabin?

The previous owner of my boat and his wife had a Wayfarer first. They regularly camped out on it with a tarp for a roof.

One morning she woke up to find a large snake on the other side of the tarp...

Re: Sailing the Boat

Has anyone tried a garden sprayer to rinse out a (thick double) dog's coat? I'm wondering if a solar shower might work better for that even though it would use a bit more water.

Re: First Timer with bottom paint (VC17)

VC17 isn't hard to work with. It's very thin but goes on smoothly. I bought a little foam roller that came with a small paint tray. I kept a little in the paint tray and rested the lid on the can to...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

The few younger sailors that I know (myself included) have pretty flexible work arrangements. I don't know that I could do a normal 9-5 job with a typical commute then pack everything up to go...

Re: Galley Oven

As you said, it depends on your own personal use. The former owners of my boat spent about 5 months living aboard each year and used the oven to store bread. And they didn't have a BBQ. They did use...

Re: the Silliest question you've ever been asked?

This isn't so much silly as giving me hope for the next generation. I had an 8 year old girl out sailing this summer. Worried she and her little sister would be scared when the boat heeled over, I...

Does anyone have a vacuum cleaner that deals with dog hair well and isn't huge? We have a Miele canister vac that came with the boat but it just takes up too much space. Heard good things about the...
