Already researched the disposal issue. Turns out its the same as for diaper disposal. In fact there's a similar product which wraps used diapers, called Diaper Genie, that's been marketed for years....

Had a Palmer 1980-2002. You need to use a "lead substitute" additive; MDR offers one; there are many others. Also need to use pure unleaded, i.e. no ethanol.

For what its worth, my headsail winch is a 50-year old (1962) bronze Merriman that continues to perform just fine and needs minimal maintenance. Production of Merriman winches ceased 20-ish years ago.
