I am pleased to say that I managed to meet up with billsull on his visit to London and gave him a whirlwind tour of Chatham Dockyard, the Marina, lunch at the local Yacht Club and a sail on the River...

I think what you are reffering to is what we in uk call a 'Spray Hood' an absoloute must here, dogers are fitted to guard rails each side.

I have an Oceanis 381, loads of space, forecabin with ensuite and two stern double cabins,dont be put off by inmast furling, cant comment on AC as we sail in the uk so just open a port:D:D

I cant comment on the areas you plan to sail in but a 311 would be a good choice, I think beneteau used the 311 keel design for their Figaro raceing boats.
