Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

That is an interesting way to do it. I'm curious how you encourage the trailer to go down into the water. Many launch ramps level out not too far after you are off the ramp. Not down hill enough for...

Re: sailing / passing another sailboat etiquette

Water balloons are latex, which is not plastic. Exposure to UV and the natural bacteria breaks them down pretty quick - 50 to 60 hours shown by a grade school experiment. Yes, there is excessive...

Re: sailing / passing another sailboat etiquette

The water guns were a joke, but I would certainly condone such an activity wholeheartedly.

My kids have had little interest in sailing, however they have been playing Assassin's Creed a lot...

sailing / passing another sailboat etiquette

So I've always heard it stated that even when out cruising, if you are overtaking and passing another boat, that there is always a race going on. So that got me wondering, if on a hot summer day, you...

Re: Can't seem to buy a boat

Yep, actually I just checked my first email, which was in January of 2013. At that point there was an issue with the title - meaning the actual owner was not in the same state as the boat. (Son was...

Re: Can't seem to buy a boat

Hey, don't know if this move this thread back up to having life, but I got a telephone response back from the gentleman with the RL. Once talking to him directly, he was been much more responsive. 2...

Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

I was careless in my search for specs, and did not notice I looked at a Catalina 25, rather than the Capri 25.

I just went back and looked at the spec you listed, and noticed a fin keel. Is there...

Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

When I started this thread almost 3 years ago, I was not aware of Portsmouth Yardstick, however, now it is my go to place for numbers. Once in a while, you will find something that has a PHRF rating,...

Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

I have often thought removing the pontoons on my Hobie 14 of putting some old snowmobile skies on instead just to see what it would do out on the lake.

Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

Only thing that is ruling the 7.9 out for me is price tag. When I started looking, my budget was a little bigger than it is now. I keep saving money, but there is a leak in my boat fund. At the...

Re: Polars, PHRF, boat speed, boat shopping

Since one has decided to wake an old thread, I'll respond and say, I am still shopping. Lately I've been looking for an RL 24. Seems to fit most requirements, and from everything I have read, it...

Re: Can't seem to buy a boat

As if to be slapped in the face, A Craigslist search engine I have been using regularly just popped up an RL near St Paul, which would have been close enough for an easy drive, description had some...

Re: Can't seem to buy a boat

I have tried to provide enough specific info and questions about the boats so the buyer knows I'm a real person.

BTW: Why do you think the Holder will be more fun? The RL is rated slightly...

Can't seem to buy a boat

No one will reply back. I've been in pursuit of trying to buy an RL24. Talked to the owner's parents once, but never been able to get a hold of the owner. Kind of giving up, but then found another...

Re: Backing up (or not)

I have an idea for you. This is what I did to my previous boat. Made things much simpler. Since I can cleat my tiller, that also holds the engine straight as well. Makes life much more predictable....

Re: Backing up (or not)

Anyone for dropping a trolling motor on the front of the boat to use as a bow thruster? Seems like for a few hundred bucks and some creativity, you should be able to solve the problem. They seem to...

Re: Knock Downs

If you can manage 2 wives, there is no storm you can't handle.

Owning a Hobie, I put foam in the mast, so it would float. It did prevent the boat from turning turtle. I've often wondered about an...

Re: Ok, so here we go - taking the plunge

Wow, waking an old thread. There is a Yahoo group for all of AFC, and several Mini Tonners= 2+2's in the group. I can't figure out why the center boar trunk would ever need extensive repairs. Its...

Re: 35 knots- dingy sailing

While interesting, I'm not convinced that is 35 knots. The boat does not seem as fast as it should be in those conditions. Last in the video, they pass some Sunfish type boats. If you look at how far...

This website is totally screwed up as soon as one opens anything in tabs. Even turning off the chat feature does not resolve the problem. All the tabs want to duplicate the most recent tab. It also...

I've been sailing on the Chain O' Lakes in IL for the past month. I'm in a little 17 footer. If you know anything about the chain, there is not one power boat out there less than 500 HP. Typically...

I'm always arguing with a black girl at work as to who has the darker tan.

Seriously though, with such a small boat, I've sailed down wind @ 2 knots with the sails down - meaning the boat is...

Bimini top - does it add windage?

I'm thinking of adding a cheap bimini top to my boat. I'm am curious how much it will effect handling. Does increase weather helm?

I suppose in theory, it should ad lift to the rear of the boat...
