Re: What wood is this cabin sole made off??

Looks like Luan (a.k.a., Philippine Mahogany) to me. But, like others have said, it's tough to tell from a pic. Whatever it is, it's pretty rotten. Just match it with something that looks close;...

Re: Problem with new batteries keeping the charge

It may or may not have anything to so with your current problems (no pun intended), but a cycle counter (clicky-clicky (http://home.comcast.net/~maritimespecialties/bilgepump/index.html)) hooked up...

Re: Is this a problem? Prop shaft/Cutlas Bearing

Did you grab the shaft and check for play yourself? It ain't rocket science. If the bearing is bad you can feel the shaft moving relative to the bearing, while if the bearing is good you'll feel no...

Re: Problem with new batteries keeping the charge

Even good wet-cell batteries will self discharge about 5-10%/month. Once you've completely charged you batteries, and they have "rested" for a few hours, their no-load voltage will be about 12.6V in...

Re: What would you call this type of rig?

Mast looks too far forward to me ... sloop.

Re: Violent attack, Cruisers injured, St Vincent & Grenadines, Union Island

The mods got it right. If nothing else, the relocated content advocates activities that are illegal in many (or most?) of the cruising destinations around the world (or responds to such arguments). I...

Re: 1st Summer With Mantus Anchor

Do you have any observations regarding the anchor's ability to reset after a change in current and/or wind direction?

Re: End boat condensation once and for all

These look like they're just canisters of CaS04. Basically the same stuff as Drierite, used as a desiccant in laboratories around the world. They will probably keep a fridge or locker dry for a few...

Re: California boat reg .

Teredo have been in California for a very long time. They were almost certainly introduced here by wooden ships with infested hull planking.

Re: California boat reg .

Think for a moment, poopy. The "burdened rate" for a Fish and Wildlife Warden is at least $100,000/year (probably more). So, $8,500,000/year will only fund 85 additional F&W Warden positions...

Re: California boat reg .

I believe all of those bills concerned the introduction of marine and estuarine species from foreign ports via large ships. The topic at hand is the introduction of freshwater mussels into California...

Re: Almost!

Julie, you're obviously going to have to lower your standards and only look at boats that people are happy to be rid of.

Re: Best boat to sail around the world ?

I suspected that you might be partial to the Baba, for some reason.

BTW, just to toss a real wildcard into the mix, if I was going to try such a trip singlehanded and wanted to "go small" I might...

Re: Best boat to sail around the world ?

I voted for the Westsail. But I would have picked the Baba 30 if it were on the list.

re: California boat reg .

Invasive species are a huge problem. California has been expending a lot of effort and funds to keep Dreissena spp. (the genus to which both zebra and quagga mussels belong) from becoming a serious...
