wood that attaches to chainplates

my cal 21 has a section of rotted plywood that is supposed to be attached to the chainplate. i think the veneer (take a drink!) is mahogany. is it better to use plywood or can solid mahogany boards...

New to sailing, we just picked up an old (1974??) Cal 21. In all I've read so far, it sounds like it's a fairly decent boat, especially for beginners. We're psyched to get this boat in the water...
