Re: cleats

Go with a clutch. I like Lewmar's D1's for my 25 footer. Nice to the line and hold well. With a horn cleat, you can't get proper luff tension in a good breeze. A cunni will solve it, but so will a...

Re: Anchor Bridle Advice

I'm a Wichard dealer. The hooks are nice and the pin keeps the chain from popping off. Shoot me a PM if interested in picking one up, I can probably beat defenders price for sailnet members.

Re: Avoid "diegoscustommarine" on eBay for custom canvas

And people still buy "custom" sails online from someone who's 1,000 miles away.

Canvas is no different, if you don't have someone come out to the boat they will pin the poor fitment on you. ...

Re: Extra rope/lines for a new boat

Agreed, I wasn't referring to mastheads, sorry for the confusion I was switching back n' forth.

I don't think I mentioned a furling jib, If I gave you that impression than I apologize.

the...

Re: Extra rope/lines for a new boat

You can usually fly a jib from a spin halyard but not the other way around. Boats typically come with a main halyard, jib halyard and 2 wing halyards. Race boats add a lot more. Your bowman should be...

Re: Extra rope/lines for a new boat

No rules that I'm aware of. You should have a spare halyard to your spare halyard. Most race boats have one main, one jib and 2 spin halyards. If you lose one, there are options to go up under sail...

Re: New halyard: Sta-Set or Sta-Set X?

12" sure will. Goes from a nice shape to a bagged out mess.

Re: Choreography To Walk the Jib around the Rigging

We do this on the 36.7, the J120, and the C&C 44. It also works on small boats. No is dragging the entire sail, just keeping the clew from hanging up on things.

Thanks for the photos. Anyone else have a photo they'd like to share? I'm a visual person and the photos help quite a bit.

Re: J24 keel damage - run aground

pass on this one, that repair will be well over $2k when you're done. Fine one that isn't broken.

Re: Rigging question….

Cam cleats will typically need 1.5-2" of hardware to go from the top of the cleat to the inside of the mounting surface. For this reason, I suggested drill n' tap machine screws. If you want to...

Re: Choreography To Walk the Jib around the Rigging

I agree, when the top 1/3 backwinds it's fine, however, a lot of people who have been sailing a long time are way to slow at releasing and end up dragging the sail over the spreaders while the sail...

Re: Spinnaker guys and sheets

Couple of comments on the conversation here:

end for end for boat at 35' and under. Use sheets and guys if you're on the big end of end for end gybes.
If you're over 36-37' then start looking...

I'm still waiting for a useful picture to be posted online. The ones that have been shown, only show the state of the clothe, but do not show the shape of the sail. Take a photo that looks like this:...

Re: Choreography To Walk the Jib around the Rigging

I hate backwinding a jib. It's a great way to punch a hole in the sail or beat up the leach. Only reason to do that is on a catamaran that doesn't tack well at all, and those usually don't have...

Re: Choreography To Walk the Jib around the Rigging

You don't need to go forward. If on stbd tacking to port:

Stand next to the mast on the stbd side between the mast and the lower shrouds.
Grab one shroud to stbd with you're right hand and...

Re: Crew wanted for Gov Cup Ches Bay MD

Bubble, don't be too worried about the little guys, if it's a reach for forward of the beam, stay powered up and you'll do fine. Look into cross sheeting if you can. You have waterline over both...

Lewmar 48 ST for the jib sheets. That's what the bene 36.7 uses.

Re: Do I need new sails

You need new sails. Period. That's not saying that these other "sailors" knew what they were doing, but that doesn't change the fact that 37 year old sails need to be replaced.
